60 military members netted at night spots<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): About 60 Armed Forces (ABRI) members were caught
\nat discotheques and night clubs here on Friday and Saturday night
\nin raids conducted jointly by police and military officers.<\/p>\n
It was the largest haul ever made in an operation to catch
\nundisciplined ABRI members at city discos. ABRI members are not
\nallowed to go to discotheques and night clubs.<\/p>\n
\"The servicemen are being temporarily detained here for
\nfurther questioning,\" said an officer at Jakarta Military Police
\nheadquarters on Jl. Guntur in South Jakarta yesterday.<\/p>\n
Half the men were caught in Friday's raid and the others
\nduring the second raid that began Saturday and continued until
\nSunday morning.<\/p>\n
The hundreds-strong raid team also seized three guns from the
\nalleged servicemen.<\/p>\n
The first gun was confiscated in Friday's operation at a
\ndiscotheque in East Jakarta. The other two guns were seized in
\nSaturday's raids on the Energy discotheque in West Jakarta and
\nthe Manhattan discotheque in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
As of yesterday, there was no further official statement from
\nmilitary police headquarters about the status of the servicemen
\nand why they were at the entertainment centers.<\/p>\n
Discotheques and other entertainment centers are frequently
\nused by drug traffickers to sell drugs. It is believed that some
\nABRI members act as bodyguards and \"protectors\" at some
\nentertainment centers.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso said the
\noperation was to arrest ABRI members in prohibited places, such
\nas discotheques.<\/p>\n
\"It's unavoidable that some civilians are also netted in the
\noperation,\" Sutiyoso said.<\/p>\n
Civilians<\/p>\n
During the raids, the team also arrested civilians and
\nconfiscated knives, Ecstasy pills, marijuana and Putaw, a cheap
\nkind of heroin.<\/p>\n
In South Jakarta, the team arrested three ABRI members and 19
\ncivilians at M Club discotheque at Blok M shopping plaza, Ebony
\ndiscotheque on Jl. Rasuna Said in Kuningan and Asmat Discotheque
\non Jl. Gatot Subroto.<\/p>\n
The civilians, including three women, were driven to South
\nJakarta Police Precinct for questioning while the servicemen were
\nsent to military police headquarters.<\/p>\n
One hundred and forty-seven personnel were deployed in the
\noperation in South Jakarta in which only a knife, a few grams of
\nmarijuana, putaw and three and a half Ecstasy pills were seized
\nfrom the civilians.<\/p>\n
Eight civilians were released after being charged with not
\ncarrying ID cards, said police.<\/p>\n
