596 foreigners deported for immigration violations<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): As many as 596 foreigners as of November have
\nbeen deported from Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The Immigration Office's Control and Supervision Head Zaiman
\nNurmatias said those deported mostly came from Pakistan,
\nBangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and China.<\/p>\n
\"Most of the foreigners over-stayed or violated immigration
\npermits,\" he explained.<\/p>\n
Zaiman said the number of deported foreigners this year was
\n28-percent higher compared to the same period last year in which
\n466 were deported.<\/p>\n
He also warned of a rising trend in which Indonesia was being
\nused as a transit point for those wishing to go to a third
\ncountry, particularly Australia.<\/p>\n
He said his office had noted a trend in which foreigners would
\ndepart for Australia using small vessels from Indonesian harbors
\nsuch as Pelabuhan Ratu in West Java, Cilacap in Central Java,
\nKupang and Maumere in East Nusa Tenggara and Merauke in Irian
\nJaya.<\/p>\n
He added that these illegal immigrants often forged Indonesian
\nimmigration documents before leaving the country.<\/p>\n
In the latest case, 18 Indian nationals were arrested in Wisma
\nJengger, Central Jakarta and in a restaurant in Puncak, West
\nJava, for allegedly counterfeiting documents, he said.<\/p>\n
Eleven of the Indians have been deported while the remaining
\nseven people are still being processed. (jun)<\/p>",
