57 stalls razed amid vice charge<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): Local public order officers bulldozed at least
\n57 sidewalk stalls in Kosambi district Wednesday on grounds they
\nfronted for prostitution practices.<\/p>\n
Irate owners of the kiosks in Tahang and Dadap subdistricts
\ntried to prevent the officers, who were accompanied by Moslem
\npreachers and dozens of housewives, from carrying out the action.
\nThe argument descended into stone throwing between the groups.<\/p>\n
A local resident sustained a head injury in the fray.<\/p>\n
Kosambi district head Hermansyah, who led the demolition
\noperation, repeatedly asked the stall owners to be calm, but his
\ncall went unheeded.<\/p>\n
Police officers and soldiers finally managed to mediate
\nbetween the two camps.<\/p>\n
As soon as the stone pelting subsided, bulldozers moved in to
\ndemolish the stalls and their contents.<\/p>\n
Only a handful of prostitutes were seen during the demolition,
\nprobably because their panderers learned of the demolition plan
\nand evacuated them.<\/p>\n
"Actually, hundreds of prostitutes operate here on regular
\ndays," said a public order officer who asked not to be named.<\/p>\n
The demolition led to more disappointment for prospective
\ncustomers, who could not find the women at their usual haunt on
\nJl. Kramat in Teluk Naga. (41\/jun)<\/p>",
