51 gas stations caught tampering with meters<\/p>\n

A total of 51 gas stations across Greater Jakarta have been found
\nto have tampered with their pump meters, prompting state-owned
\noil and gas company PT Pertamina to either suspend gasoline
\nsupplies or shut down their operations.<\/p>\n
The 51 gas stations include establishments located on Jl. Raya
\nBuncit, South Jakarta, Klender in East Jakarta, Cakung and Pluit
\nin North Jakarta, several areas of West Jakarta, Bukit Sentul in
\nBogor, Jl. Raya Pekayon in Bekasi and Jl. Raya Cipondoh in
\nTangerang.<\/p>\n
Pertamina's metering unit found during recent checks that the
\ngas stations had pumps with meters recording more than was
\nactually pumped into their customers' gas tanks. The problem had
\napparently been going on for months<\/p>\n
Awi Adil, spokesman for Pertamina's operations unit III, which
\ncovers Greater Jakarta, said that a number of gas stations had
\nbeen issued with warnings while many others had had their
\ngasoline supplies halted for a week, two weeks, or a month,
\ndepending on the seriousness of the violations.<\/p>\n
\"We have even ordered several gas stations to close because of
\nserious violations,\" Awi told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
He said the 51 stations had meters that exceeded the tolerable
\nlevel of 50 millimeters divergence between the amount of gas
\nactually pumped and the amount recorded on the meter for every 10
\nliters of gas purchased.<\/p>\n
\"We've shut down gas stations that were off by more than 300
\nmilliliters, and stopped supplying gas stations that pumped
\nbetween 100 millimeters and 200 millimeters less than the amount
\nrecorded on the meter,\" Awi said.<\/p>\n
He added that Pertamina only gave warnings to stations that
\npumped between 50 millimeters and 100 millimeters less than the
\namount recorded on the meter.<\/p>\n
Awi said that Pertamina had taken stern action against several
\ngas stations as they had deliberately modified their meters to
\ntake advantage of their customers.<\/p>\n
The customers would get about 3 percent less fuel than they
\nactually paid for, so that, for example, if a consumer bought 10
\nliters of fuel, he would only receive about 9.7 liters.<\/p>\n
\"Imagine how much these gas station make given that hundreds
\nof motorists buy gasoline in them every day,\" he said.<\/p>\n
So far, only one gas station, on Jl. Gatot Subroto, had been
\nreported to the police, he said.<\/p>\n
In March, Pertamina temporarily closed eight gas stations for
\ntampering with their meters while in April seven gas stations in
\nTangerang were shut down for similar violations.<\/p>\n
Pertamina also found around 50 gas stations tampering with
\ntheir meters in 2004.<\/p>",
