500,000 new jobs in ASEAN zone<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): A joint development zone involving areas
\nin northern Malaysia, southern Thailand and Sumatra will create
\nhalf a million jobs and help reduce poverty in the region, a
\nreport said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The New Straits Times, citing a study commissioned by the
\nthree countries, said 1.5 million people are also expected to
\nsettle in special economic zones to be built within the so-called
\n"growth triangle."<\/p>\n
The main beneficiaries of the vast development project will be
\nMalaysian-based manufacturers and traders, and Indonesian and
\nThai workers.<\/p>\n
The Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand growth triangle was formed in
\n1993, with the aim of mainly drawing Malaysian investment and
\nlabor-intensive industries to parts of Indonesia and Thailand
\nwhere land and labor costs are cheaper.<\/p>\n
The study recommends that two special economic zones be
\ncreated within the triangle - one linking the Malaysia-Thai
\nborder area and the other, northern Sumatra and Malaysia's
\nnorthern states.<\/p>",
