        "content": "<p>500,000 new jobs in ASEAN zone<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): A joint development zone involving areas<br>\nin northern Malaysia, southern Thailand and Sumatra will create<br>\nhalf a million jobs and help reduce poverty in the region, a<br>\nreport said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The New Straits Times, citing a study commissioned by the<br>\nthree countries, said 1.5 million people are also expected to<br>\nsettle in special economic zones to be built within the so-called<br>\n&quot;growth triangle.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The main beneficiaries of the vast development project will be<br>\nMalaysian-based manufacturers and traders, and Indonesian and<br>\nThai workers.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand growth triangle was formed in<br>\n1993, with the aim of mainly drawing Malaysian investment and<br>\nlabor-intensive industries to parts of Indonesia and Thailand<br>\nwhere land and labor costs are cheaper.<\/p>\n<p>The study recommends that two special economic zones be<br>\ncreated within the triangle - one linking the Malaysia-Thai<br>\nborder area and the other, northern Sumatra and Malaysia&apos;s<br>\nnorthern states.<\/p>",
