        "content": "<p>500 migrants declared genuine refugees<\/p>\n<p>PEKANBARU, Riau: Out of the 2,100 migrants known to have<br>\nillegally entered Riau over the last few years, 500 have been<br>\nclassified as genuine refugees, Director General of Immigration<br>\nIman Santoso said here on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The classification into the genuine refugee status was made by<br>\nthe United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and<br>\nthe International Organization for Migration (IOM), he said.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the illegal migrants entering Indonesia were Afghans,<br>\nwho ran away from their country because of the civil war, Iman<br>\nsaid, adding that some of them had expressed an intention to<br>\nreturn home due to the improving conditions in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>The 2,100 were part of the thousands of migrants, including<br>\nthose from Iraq, that had made their way across Asia to Indonesia<br>\nin the hope of reaching their final destination -- Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Iman said the Indonesian and Australian governments had agreed<br>\nto jointly finance the return of the illegal migrants to their<br>\ncountries of origin.<\/p>\n<p>\"Australia has pledged financial assistance to Afghan refugees<br>\nwho want to return to their country voluntarily,\" he added. --<br>\nAntara<\/p>",
