500 houses, rice fields inundated<\/p>\n
BANDUNG, West Java: Hundreds of farmers in Majalaya and
\nCiparay districts have lost their crops as floods inundated and
\ndestroyed their rice fields over the last two days.<\/p>\n
The flood waters reached between 50 centimeters and 100
\ncentimeters in height, but gradually subsided on Sunday afternoon
\nwhen a number of farmers tried to save their rice plants using a
\nrubber dinghy.<\/p>\n
The attempt was given up when the dinghy incurred a puncture.<\/p>\n
Financial losses are estimated to reach Rp 170 million
\n(US$18,085).<\/p>\n
\"Our plants must be rotting by now as they have been far too
\nlong under water,\" one of the farmers, Ujang Rosmana, said.<\/p>\n
Water also inundated around 500 houses, two subdistrict
\noffices and one community health clinic as a result of the heavy
\nrain which began on Friday.<\/p>\n
No casualties were reported.<\/p>\n
Students of seven elementary and junior high schools also
\nsuffered from the flooding. They have been out of class since
\nThursday as the flood waters have swamped their schools.<\/p>\n
Head of Ciparay district Mohammad Komarudin Saleh said major
\nfloods usually hit the area around December and January.<\/p>\n
\"The floods are the result of the construction of a dam in
\nSapan village in Majalaya to contain the Citarik, Cikeruh and
\nCitarum rivers,\" Mohammad speculated. (25)<\/p>",
