        "content": "<p>50 workers protest dismissals<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Fifty former employees of the beverage firm PT<br>\nPolari Limunusa in Tangerang visited the Jakarta Legal Aid<br>\nInstitute on Wednesday to complain about their dismissal last<br>\nmonth.<\/p>\n<p>According to the workers, they were dismissed shortly after<br>\nsetting up a branch of the All-Indonesia Workers Union (SPSI) at<br>\ntheir plant.<\/p>\n<p>\"The firm did not acknowledge our union after we proposed a<br>\nnew working agreement,\" Teguh, the worker's spokesman, said.<\/p>\n<p>Senior company officials insist that the workers were<br>\ndismissed as a result of the economic crisis, he added.<\/p>\n<p>None of the firm's executives could be reached for comment on<br>\nWednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Teguh said the firm offered severance payment in accordance<br>\nwith Ministry of Manpower regulations but that the had workers<br>\nrejected the offer.<\/p>\n<p>He said the employees, all of whom had worked for the firm for<br>\nbetween three and five years, wanted to be reemployed and to be<br>\ngiven their December salaries, which average Rp 250,000 (US$33)<br>\nper person.<\/p>\n<p>They also want the company to pay their Idul Fitri bonuses in<br>\naccordance with the law, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Rino Subagyo, a lawyer with the institute, said that the firm<br>\nhad violated an International Labor Organization (ILO) convention<br>\non freedom to set up a union. The government ratified the treaty<br>\nlast year.<\/p>\n<p>Rino said the institute would summon the firm's executives to<br>\ndiscuss the matter further. (jun)<\/p>",
