50 students questioned over abused<\/p>\n

Police here were questioning around 50 students of the Public
\nAdministration Institute (STPDN) in Sumedang, West Java, on
\nThursday in connection with the mysterious death of a fellow
\nstudent, Wahyu Hidayat.<\/p>\n
Wahyu, 20, died on Tuesday night after allegedly being beaten
\nby older students at the institute, which has a reputation for
\nimposing military-style discipline on its students.<\/p>\n
Sumedang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Yoyok Subagyo, speaking
\nto journalists at the STPDN campus, said the preliminary
\ninvestigation confirmed that the victim had died from bullying.<\/p>\n
Only 26 of the 50 students were later taken to the local
\npolice station for further questioning about their roles in the
\nincident, he added.<\/p>\n
An STPDN student, who requested anonymity, said senior
\nstudents had decided to teach Wahyu a "lesson" as they considered
\nhim to have been disloyal.<\/p>\n
The victim was subjected to bullying and beating for three
\nhours in an open area east of the institute's sports hall
\nstarting at 11 p.m. on Tuesday night, the unnamed student said.<\/p>\n
"After that, he (Wahyu) passed out and was taken to the first-
\naid room on the campus. But he was already dead by the time he
\ngot there," he added.<\/p>\n
Another student said Wahyu was faulted by senior students for
\nfailing to attend an annual meeting with West Java Governor Danny
\nSetiawan two weeks ago.<\/p>\n
The meeting was deemed important by the older STPDN students,
\nwho usually use the forum to ask for "pocket money" from the
\ngovernor on top of the Rp 5 million (US$595) allowance allocated
\nby the West Java provincial budget for each of the students from
\nthe province.<\/p>\n
Wahyu, from Bogor, West Java, was a first semester student at
\nthe institute, which is run by the Ministry of Home Affairs.<\/p>\n
The alleged beating of Wahyu took place around the same time
\nas the announcement of the results of the latest intake of around
\n1,200 new students at 11 p.m. on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
STPDN administrators refused to comment on the killing, and
\njournalists and police officers were prevented by security guards
\nfrom entering the campus.<\/p>\n
It was only at 5 p.m. that a team of police detectives was
\nfinally allowed to enter.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for the institute said its senate members were
\ndiscussing the imposition of academic sanctions on the senior
\nstudents believed to have been responsible for the death.<\/p>\n
Wahyu's body was taken to the Al Islam Hospital in Bandung,
\nWest Java, early on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
A doctor at the hospital said Wahyu died from head injuries.
\nHe did not elaborate further.<\/p>\n
The STPDN had rejected the hospital's request that the
\ndeceased's body be brought to Hasan Sadikin Hospital for an
\nautopsy, and instead sent it home to Bogor on Wednesday morning,
\nthe doctor added.<\/p>\n
In March 2000, STPDN student Erie Rakhman, 22, died after
\nbeing beaten by seven older students.<\/p>\n
Erie died several hours after being taken to the Al Islam
\nHospital. He is believed to have been beaten with a blunt object.<\/p>\n
The seven students charged with the killing were convicted and
\nsentenced to jail terms by the Sumedang District Court.<\/p>",
