50 schools to hold makeup exams<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Students at 50 senior high schools in the city
\nwill have to take a makeup examination next week after the leaks
\nof last week's nationwide final examination (Ebtanas), an
\nofficial said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
"We will hold the makeup examination at 50 schools, among
\nothers, state senior high schools SMUN 55, SMUN 71 and SMUN 100
\nwhere we found higher deviations compared to results of the
\nstudents' daily tests," head of Jakarta office of the Ministry of
\nEducation and Culture Alwi Nurdin said.<\/p>\n
"Most of the schools are located in East, South, and West
\nJakarta. The students at these schools will undergo a makeup
\nexamination next Monday," he added.<\/p>\n
The office determined that students who were implicated in
\nmaking use of the leaked test data would undergo makeup
\nexaminations from Monday until Thursday, along with the one for
\nstudents who failed to show up for the initial exam.<\/p>\n
He said the subjects to be retested would be different from
\none school to another.<\/p>\n
"We found most leaks were from test copies for mathematics,
\nphysics and English," he said.<\/p>\n
Alwi also accused several other learning institutions
\n(popularly known as Bimbingan Belajar) as leaking the test copies
\nto its participants.<\/p>\n
It wasn't the first time the institutions have been accused of
\nleaking test copies. The leaks allegedly occurred not only at the
\nfinal examination, but also at the enrollment test for state
\nuniversities (UMPTN).<\/p>\n
The institutions said they had kept track of past examinations
\nand learned of changing trends.<\/p>\n
"This way we can predict the questions for the next tests.
\nUsually our predictions are 80 to 90 percent correct," was the
\ntypical answer given by the institutions.<\/p>\n
Separately, Minister of National Education Yahya Muhaimin
\nblamed officials at the Ministry's Jakarta office for the leaks.<\/p>\n
"The city's education bureaucracy is still a mess, being
\nunable to hold and supervise the examination properly," he told
\nreporters.<\/p>\n
"I will evaluate the examination procedures for all schools as
\nit needs a large amount of funds and is prone to irregularities
\nsuch as the leaks," he added.<\/p>\n
The minister, however, said the nationwide examination was
\nstill needed at high school levels to standardize the results.<\/p>\n
"We are still investigating where the leaks happened. If any
\nministry officials were involved in the scam, I will ask them to
