50 masked men raid discotheque, hurt guests<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Some 50 masked men dressed in black raided the
\nJeJe Discotheque on Jl. Budi Kemuliaan, Tanah Abang in Central
\nJakarta in the early hours of Saturday.<\/p>\n
They smashed windows, several chairs and tables, a computer
\nand some projectors, all worth about Rp 100 million, and injured
\nfive guests.<\/p>\n
Ari, an employee at the discotheque, said the unidentified
\ngroup arrived at about 2:10 a.m. in two public minibuses, armed
\nwith samurai swords, guns and sticks.<\/p>\n
The streets around the building were then full of parked cars.
\n\"There were about 600 guests both in the front yard and inside
\nthe two-story building,\" said Ari, adding that there were usually
\nabout 800 guests until 5 a.m. on weekends.<\/p>\n
He said guests tried to escape from two exits including the
\nemergency door at the back of the building.<\/p>\n
Following the attack, \"The lights and music were turned off,
\nwhile some 35 employees helped guests reach the exits,\" Ari said.<\/p>\n
Some guests, who stumbled over broken chairs, sustained slight
\ninjuries to their legs and were taken to Budi Kemuliaan Hospital
\nacross the way from the discotheque.<\/p>\n
According to Supri, a street vendor nearby, some of the
\nattackers dragged two foreigners outside and beat them up, until
\nthey managed to escape.<\/p>\n
\"The attackers suddenly left the building 30 minutes
\nafterwards, and left in their vehicles,\" said Supri. Police
\narrived shortly after.<\/p>\n
Azis, the operations manager, said that the discotheque, which
\nsuffered estimated losses of Rp 20 million, had no enemies nor
\nhad it received prior threats.<\/p>\n
Chief of the Central Jakarta criminal investigation unit, Sr.
\nInsp. Hendra Suhartiyono said the attack was the first of its
\nkind in Tanah Abang.<\/p>\n
Hendra said his investigation team would coordinate with
\npolice in Depok, south of here. A similar attack on a discotheque
\noccurred around 00:20 a.m. on Jl. Margonda Raya near the bus
\nterminal there.<\/p>\n
The Depok police said the attackers at the Pin Bi Discotheque
\nconsisted of some 200 people claiming to be members of the
\nHizbullah Front group. They wrecked chairs and tables, a minibar,
\nthe cashier's desk and made off with some cash, but no one was
\nhurt. They also attacked two pinball kiosks at the bus terminal
\ndestroying 20 pinball tables. (07)<\/p>",
