        "content": "<p>5-day school week to be phased in<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman<br>\nDjojonegoro says schools will be encouraged to implement the<br>\nshort five-day working week in phases.<\/p>\n<p>Wardiman was quoted as saying by the Antara news agency as<br>\nsaying yesterday that he does not foresee any problem in<br>\nimplementing the shorter school week.<\/p>\n<p>Many education experts have predicted logistical and technical<br>\nproblems in implementing the scheme, especially given that many<br>\nschool buildings are still being used by more than one<br>\ninstitution under the arrangement of morning and afternoon<br>\nshifts. They said the schools could cram 42 hours of study as<br>\nsuggested by the national education curriculum but this will<br>\nupset the shift arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>Others argue that the short school week would also upset the<br>\nschedule of many teachers because they are teaching in more than<br>\none schools to make ends meat. Teachers are among the lowest paid<br>\nprofession in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Wardiman said however that the problems could be iron out if<br>\nthe schools move into the short working week in phases.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry of education will monitor closely the trial<br>\noperation of the scheme at selected schools and make an<br>\nevaluation which will be made available to other schools.<\/p>\n<p>He said if the scheme turned out to improve the students'<br>\nperformance, then the schools should go ahead and implement it in<br>\nfull. But if the learning process is affected, then these schools<br>\nshould not hesitate to halt the scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The five-day school week complements the five-day working week<br>\nscheme now being tried at most government agencies.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal came from President Soeharto who said that a<br>\nshorter working would allow people to spend more time with their<br>\nfamily, which in turn could boost their productivity.<\/p>\n<p>Most private companies and some state enterprises have already<br>\nintroduced the shorter working week. The government hopes that<br>\nthe five-day working week will be fully implemented at all its<br>\nagencies by Aug. 17, 1995 when Indonesia marks its 50th<br>\nindependence anniversary. (rms)<\/p>",
