        "content": "<p>400 old laws to be revised<\/p>\n<p>BANDUNG, West Java (JP): The government plans to revise 400<br>\nlaws made during the Dutch colonial era because they are no<br>\nlonger suitable, an official says.<\/p>\n<p>Chief of the Agency for National Legal Development Sunaryati<br>\nHartono said on Saturday the laws would still be used until<br>\nsubstitutes are ready.<\/p>\n<p>The laws include gubernatorial decrees dating back to the<br>\nperiod of the Netherlands Indies Civil Administration between<br>\n1945 and 1950.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The laws are used simply because there are no alternatives,&quot;<br>\nshe said in a seminar at the Parahiyangan University. She added<br>\nthat some laws might be scrapped, amended or replaced so as to<br>\nfit the current need.<\/p>\n<p>Outdated laws have long been come under public scrutiny but<br>\nonly a few have been revised.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Justice Oetojo Oesman conceded last week that<br>\n&quot;many&quot; Indonesian laws needed revising because they no longer<br>\nconformed with current demand for justice and legal certainty.<\/p>\n<p>Sunaryati said that many prevailing laws, passed either during<br>\nthe colonial era or after it, run foul with public interests<br>\nlargely because the law makers failed to consult with local<br>\nexperts during the drafting process.<\/p>\n<p>The law makers only paid attention to legal systems in other<br>\ncountries but lack knowledge of local society, she said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;They generally learn only from foreign reference books and<br>\nrarely do they study those written by local experts.
