40 detective units deployed to hunt robbery gangs<\/p>\n

Reacting to the recent increase in the number of armed robberies,
\nJakarta Police have set up 40 units of police detectives to hunt
\ndown members of robbery syndicates in Greater Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani said that the
\nteams, each consisting of five police detectives, were now
\npatrolling the city and surrounding towns by night, with special
\nattention given to places police had identified as hideouts.<\/p>\n
"We have been patrolling Greater Jakarta to investigate and
\narrest members of robbery syndicates. They are all plainclothes
\nofficers and only work in the evening as officers in each area
\nwill monitor the situation by the day," he said.<\/p>\n
He said that his officers had identified several places across
\nthe city where robbers were believed to be hiding.<\/p>\n
Firman acknowledged that the level and quantity of armed
\nrobberies had increased in the last few months, attested both by
\nmedia reports and complaints from the public.<\/p>\n
"Robbers are now cleverer than before as they are only
\ntargeting places and individuals they know have a lot of money.
\nMost of recent robberies also used firearms to achieve their
\nobjectives," he said.<\/p>\n
According to police data, dozens of armed robberies have
\noccurred in the last seven days and police have not been able to
\narrest any of the perpetrators.<\/p>\n
A group of armed robbers broke into the house of businessman
\nKomarudin in Karawaci, Tangerang last Monday, and took Rp 300
\nmillion in cash. Armed robbers broke into Panji Wijaya's house in
\nJagakarsa, South Jakarta later on the same day and took millions
\nof rupiah.<\/p>\n
Businessman Suhartono, 58, was robbed by five people on his
\nway home from a bank in South Jakarta several days earlier. The
\nrobbers took Rp 35 million from him.<\/p>\n
Firman complained that while criminals continued to become
\nsophisticated, the police still lacked qualified personnel and
\nhad insufficient budget, making it almost impossible for them to
\nwork effectively to match the criminals.<\/p>\n
"We are trying hard to secure all parts of the capital but
\nrising operational costs have forced us to make priorities in our
\noperations. We have not been able to continuously train our
\npersonnel because of budget constraints," he said.<\/p>\n
Firman said that aside from deploying the teams, the police
\nwould only focus on banks and other financial centers such as
\nmoney changers.<\/p>\n
"Our focus on financial centers doesn't mean that we don't
\nguard other places. We will continue to be on alert for crimes in
\nother places," he said.<\/p>\n
Firman said that the police would also intensify operations to
\nsearch for firearms in several places in the capital to reduce
\nthe number of illegal firearms circulating among the robbers.<\/p>\n
Police said earlier that they had marked several areas in East
\nJakarta, Bekasi, Depok and North Jakarta as places where illegal
\nguns were circulating.<\/p>",
