As the school holiday travel rush continues, state railway operator PT KAI reports that over 395,000 discounted tickets remain available out of a total quota of 1.17 million. The company is urging passengers to adhere to baggage regulations, limiting free carry-on items to 20 kg and specific dimensions, to ensure comfort and safety during the busy period.

Jakarta - The school holiday period is a much-anticipated moment for
many families to return to their hometowns, go on holiday, or take their
children to enjoy the experience of travelling by train. Amid this
increased mobility, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is reminding
passengers to prepare for their journeys carefully, including managing
their belongings in accordance with baggage regulations.

Vice President Corporate Communication of KAI, Anne Purba, stated
that a comfortable journey begins with simple preparations at home.
Choosing items that are truly needed, packing neatly, and understanding
baggage limits will help passengers enjoy a more relaxed trip from the
moment they arrive at the station until they reach their
destination.

“School holidays are often synonymous with suitcases, children’s
bags, packed meals, and souvenirs. KAI encourages passengers to bring
only what is necessary so that the space inside the train remains
comfortable, the aisles stay clear, and the journey with family becomes
more enjoyable,” Anne said.

KAI stipulates that each passenger is entitled to carry free baggage
with a maximum weight of 20 kilograms, a maximum volume of 100 dm³,
maximum dimensions of 70 cm x 48 cm x 30 cm, and a maximum of four
items. These items must be placed on the overhead luggage racks or in
designated areas.

These provisions are important to observe as the number of passengers
increases during the school holiday season. When baggage is properly
arranged, other passengers can also enjoy a comfortable journey. Station
and onboard staff can also ensure a more orderly boarding process and
trip.

For passengers carrying items exceeding 20 kg up to a maximum of 40
kg, or with a maximum volume of 200 dm³ and dimensions up to 70 cm x 48
cm x 60 cm, the items can still be brought into the carriage but will
incur an excess baggage fee. The tariff is set at Rp10,000 per kilogram
for Executive class, Rp6,000 per kilogram for Business class, and
Rp2,000 per kilogram for Economy class.

Meanwhile, items weighing more than 40 kg or exceeding the dimensions
of 70 cm x 48 cm x 60 cm are prohibited from being brought into the
carriage. For large quantities of luggage, KAI advises passengers to use
freight forwarding services to keep the journey practical and the
seating area comfortable.

In addition to managing the quantity of luggage, passengers are also
urged to pay attention to the types of items they carry. KAI prohibits
passengers from bringing pets, narcotics, psychotropic substances, other
illegal drugs, firearms or sharp weapons without official documentation,
explosives, flammable materials, and pungent-smelling items that could
disturb other passengers.

Anne added that baggage regulations are not solely about weight
limits, but are part of shared travel etiquette. Inside a train
carriage, every passenger shares space with other families, children,
the elderly, and those travelling long distances.

“The train is a shared travel space. By bringing only sufficient
luggage, passengers help maintain the comfort of others, facilitate
smoother boarding, and make the holiday atmosphere feel warmer,” Anne
said.

At the same time, public interest in the 30% Transport Discount
programme for the school holiday period continues to show a positive
response. This government programme, run through the Directorate General
of Railways at the Ministry of Transportation, is valid for departures
from 20 June to 5 July 2026 on Commercial Economy class services.

Based on data updated as of 24 June 2026 at 10.00 WIB, out of a
cumulative total capacity of 1,174,624 seats, 779,093 tickets have been
booked, representing 66.33 percent of the total quota. Consequently,
395,531 discounted seats are still available for the public to utilise
as long as the quota remains.

School holiday travel patterns are also evident from the high
passenger interest in several favourite routes. The
Lempuyangan–Pasarsenen route recorded the highest number with 13,946
passengers, followed by Pasarsenen–Lempuyangan with 13,614 passengers,
Pasarsenen–Yogyakarta with 12,216 passengers, Sukabumi–Bogor Paledang
with 9,216 passengers, and Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng–Solo Balapan with
8,912 passengers.

In terms of train services, the highest volume was recorded on KA
Joglosemarkerto with 39,263 passengers, KA Ambarawa Ekspres with 33,217
passengers, KA Pangrango with 32,076 passengers, KA Sawunggalih with
29,730 passengers, and KA Jayakarta with 22,969 passengers. This data
shows that the school holidays are a driver of intercity mobility,
family tourism, and public travel to various centres of activity across
different regions.

Anne invited members of the public who have not yet obtained tickets
to plan their journeys immediately through the Access by KAI
application, the kai.id website, or other official KAI ticket sales
channels. Passengers are also advised to re-check their departure
schedules, identification, baggage regulations, and to arrive at the
station early so that the boarding process runs smoothly.

“There are still hundreds of thousands of discounted seats available
for passengers to utilise. We hope this year’s school holidays will be a
safe, orderly, comfortable journey full of good stories for Indonesian
families,” Anne concluded.
",
