$33.7 million grant from Japan for two projects<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Japan signed diplomatic notes with Indonesia
\nyesterday on 3.09 billion yen (US$33.7 million) in grant
\nassistance for two projects aimed at increasing food production
\nand conserving biodiversity.<\/p>\n
The notes were signed here by Director General for Foreign
\nEconomic Relations Soemadi D.M. Brotodiningrat and Japanese
\nAmbassador Taizo Watanabe.<\/p>\n
The assistance comes as part of the \"Indonesian Biodiversity
\nConservation Program\", which is a joint effort by Indonesia, the
\nUnites States and Japan.<\/p>\n
Out of the fund, 1.35 billion yen is to be used to increase
\nfood crop production and productivity by provision of farm inputs
\nand such agricultural equipment as tractors, irrigation pumps and
\nrice milling machines.<\/p>\n
The project will mainly focus on eastern Indonesia, covering
\nthe provinces of East Kalimantan, South, North and Southeast
\nSulawesi, East and West Nusa Tenggara, Maluku and Irian Jaya.<\/p>\n
The other 1.74 billion yen is intended to conserve Indonesia's
\ntremendous biological wealth by supporting the implementation of
\nIndonesia's \"National Strategy for Biodiversity Management\" and
\nthe \"Biodiversity Action Plan for Indonesia\".<\/p>\n
The Japanese contribution will strengthen the management and
\nconservation of biological diversity in Indonesia and assist the
\nIndonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and the Ministry of
\nForestry.<\/p>\n
The project is designed to upgrade the capability of LIPI's
\nresearch and development center for biology and the ministry's
\nmanagement function in the \"Gunung Halimun National Park,\" a
\nmodel site of conservation and the study of biodiversity.<\/p>\n
Biological diversity constitutes the totality of all existent
\nspecies, genes and ecosystems surrounding them. Indonesia's
\nextraordinary biological resources, essential to human survival,
\nwill be threatened if forests and marine conditions continue to
\ndeteriorate. (31)<\/p>",
