Indramayu police have seized at least 30,000 illegal
\nfirecrackers in a joint security operation with the local
\nmilitary on the eve of the Ramadhan fasting month.<\/p>\n
Adj. Sr. Comr. Setyo Warsito, chief of the Indramayu, West
\nJava, Police Precinct, said there were no arrests during the
\njoint operation though those caught were given a final warning.<\/p>\n
The operation, which netted small and large-sized explosive
\ndevices, was launched because local people had ignored the
\nauthorities' warnings against trading and using the dangerous
\nexplosive devices, said Setyo.<\/p>\n
\"We have publicized but laws but people have ignored them. The
\nrampant use of firecrackers has caused unrest among local
\npeople,\" he said here on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Setyo admitted he had given instructions not to arrest
\nfirecracker traders until the firecracker ban was widely
\nunderstood among the people.<\/p>\n
\"During the joint operation, firecracker traders were given a
\nlast warning and told they will be brought to court should they
\nbe found guilty of trading the dangerous explosive substance,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The 1939 law on firecrackers allows for a three-month jail
\nsentence or a maximum Rp 7,500 fine for those found guilty of
\nmanufacturing, trafficking, trading or using the devices.<\/p>\n
Like other regencies, Indramayu has a bylaw against the use of
\nfirecrackers.<\/p>\n
Firecracker use has been rampant among young people marking
\nthe arrival of the fasting month, the Idul Fitri holidays and
\nother important events such as marriage ceremonies.<\/p>",
