        "content": "<p>JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto has spotlighted the significant\nexpenditure by workers on rental housing costs, which amounts to around\n30% of their monthly income.<\/p>\n<p>The government plans to redirect this burden into instalments for\npersonally owned homes via a programme to construct one million\nhouses.<\/p>\n<p>In his speech, Prabowo stated that the government aims to ensure\nworkers have access to affordable housing through long-term instalment\nschemes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will assure you that you will eventually own that house. So, the\n30% previously used for rent will be reduced; it will be for you to\ninstalment your own home,\u201d Prabowo emphasised in his speech at the\nInternational Labour Day or May Day 2026 commemoration at Monas,\nJakarta, on Friday (1\/5\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe instalments will be over 20 years; if not possible, 25 years. If\nnot settled in 25 years, 30 years. If not, 35 years, 40 years,\u201d he\nexplained.<\/p>\n<p>According to Prabowo, the government is currently targeting the\nconstruction of at least one million houses, to be initiated this\nyear.<\/p>\n<p>These houses will be built near industrial zones and workers\u2019\nworkplaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year, we have already reached 350,000 houses, but our target is\nat least one million houses; we will start one million houses this year\nas well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also revealed plans to develop new cities, each comprising around\n100,000 apartment units. These areas will be equipped with education\nfacilities, sports amenities, daycare centres, hospitals, and public\ntransportation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have ordered that there must be schools, sports facilities,\ndaycare centres, hospitals, and most importantly, transportation,\u201d he\nstated.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Prabowo mentioned that the government has instructed\nstate-owned banks to disburse people\u2019s credit with a maximum interest\nrate of 5% per year to support housing financing for low-income\ncommunities.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the housing construction programme also has the\npotential to create millions of new jobs each year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine, one house requires five workers, meaning each year we could\ncreate millions of jobs,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>",
