28 get travel bans over illegal logging<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The National Police announced on Tuesday that travel
\nbans had been placed on 28 people, mostly Malaysians, who
\nallegedly financed illegal logging in Papua and other parts of
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Zainuri Lubis said the suspects
\nincluded only two Indonesian, while the remaining 26 were
\nMalaysian citizens, including PT Wapoga Mutiara Timber president
\ndirector Tan Eng Kwee and PT Malindo Utama Jaya president
\ndirector Sie Kee Ming.<\/p>\n
The two Indonesians included one Fenny Rahmad, who worked for
\na Malaysian citizen identified as Weng Ximing.<\/p>\n
However, the police could not say whether the 28 suspects were
\nstill in Indonesia or had already fled abroad.<\/p>\n
Earlier, two officials from the Papua forestry office were
\narrested for issuing unauthorized logging permits, while four
\nmid-ranking police officers were questioned for allegedly taking
\nbribes from illegal logging financiers.<\/p>\n
Since the start of a joint operation against illegal logging
\nin Papua, the police have arrested a total of 69 suspects,
\nincluding nine Malaysian nationals, and seized 326,058 cubic
\nmeters of logs and 7,235 cubic meters of processed timber, along
\nwith 727 pieces of heavy equipment, four barges and eight
