28 caught without ID cards<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Central Jakarta Police have rounded up 28 people
\nwho were caught without their identification cards (KTP) during
\nan operation at Senen market, an officer said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Second Lt. Suharjono, chief detective of the Central Jakarta
\nPolice subprecinct, said that seven of the 28 offenders were
\nidentified as former prisoners.<\/p>\n
The crackdown, Operasi Kilat Jaya, conducted Monday between
\n10 p.m. and 2 a.m., followed a clash at the market between local
\nsidewalk vendors and public order officers on Monday morning.<\/p>\n
\"The operation was aimed at cracking down on hoodlums and
\nconfiscating sharp weapons, drugs and pornographic books,\"
\nSuharjono said.<\/p>\n
The seven former inmates were detained at the Senen Police
\nsubprecinct for questioning, while the remaining 21 were sent to
\na social rehabilitation center in Kedoya, West Jakarta, he said.
\nFailing to carry an official ID card is an offense here.<\/p>\n
\"Some of them were rounded up on the first floor of the market
\nbuilding and the others were in the parking lot of the market's
\nBlok VI.\"<\/p>\n
Suharjono said that the operation was held at Senen market
\nbecause the area was increasingly becoming a new hangout for
\nhoodlums and prostitutes.<\/p>\n
The police, however, declined to say whether the operation was
\naimed at searching for the alleged hoodlums who may have provoked
\nMonday's clash.<\/p>\n
\"The operation was just aimed at hoodlums who are believed to
\nbe disturbing business activities. Some vendors have complained
\nabout the (hoodlums') presence,\" Suharjono said.<\/p>\n
He admitted that police would safeguard the area for at least
\na week following the clean-up operation, which was launched by
\nCentral Jakarta municipality on Saturday.<\/p>\n
During Saturday's operation -- a joint effort with public
\norder officers and members of the Central Jakarta military
\ndistrict and Central Jakarta Police precinct -- 42 sidewalk
\nvendors were notified that they would be relocated to the fourth
\nfloor of the market.<\/p>\n
But vendors refused to budge when officers came Monday to
\nenforce the order, saying that no buyers would go to the market's
\nfourth floor.<\/p>\n
Fifty police officers were keeping an eye on the market
\nyesterday, in particular the parking lot and fourth floor. (04)<\/p>",
