28 arrested for attacking officers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City police arrested at least 28 people
\nyesterday in connection with Monday's attack on security officers
\nat the house of a suspect in the case of the recent brutal murder
\nof a mother and her children in Ciracas, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The people are still in custody for questioning about their
\nsuspected roles in the clashes, which resulted in the destruction
\nof property and a number of injuries.<\/p>\n
A senior officer of the Ciracas police sub-precinct said the
\ngroup of people being questioned includes 23 senior high school
\nstudents.<\/p>\n
\"About half of them are being treated at the police hospital
\nfor minor injuries,\" said the officer, requesting anonymity.<\/p>\n
The house attacked belongs to the chief suspect in the murder
\nof the wife and three children of Rohadi.<\/p>\n
Identified as Filipus, the suspect was allegedly helped in the
\nkilling by his son and two nephews.<\/p>\n
Rohadi's eight-month-old baby was found injured but alive at
\nthe crime scene. Despite reports yesterday that she had died, the
\nbaby remains alive. Rohadi's eldest daughter was at school when
\nthe murders took place.<\/p>\n
Yesterday's clash began after police prohibited people
\nflocking to the area from breaking the police line at Filipus'
\nhouse.<\/p>\n
The killing was allegedly the result of dispute between the
\nsuspect and Rohadi's family over cassava trees.<\/p>\n
Monday's clash took place after an angry crowd had burned down
\nFilipus' two-story house and two other nearby houses.<\/p>\n
Some students attacked and threw stones at police and military
\npersonnel, who were trying to bar their access to what remained
\nof the suspects' house.<\/p>\n
Police and military officers, lawyers and city councilors have
\nexpressed deep regret over the incident. Some have suggested that
\nthe local press stop publishing stories on the situation as one
\nmeans of preventing an escalation of violence.<\/p>\n
City Military Chief of Staff Brig. Gen. Sutiyoso said Monday's
\nincident was a result of people showing their sympathy for Rohadi
\nand his family in improper ways.<\/p>\n
\"I suggest they stop their attacks and obey our existing
\nrules,\" Sutiyoso said.<\/p>\n
Mulya Lubis, a noted human rights activist and corporate
\nlawyer, said Monday's attack was improper, even given the
\nhorrendous nature of the murder which preceded it.<\/p>\n
\"The people should let the police handle the case,\" Lubis told
\nThe Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
According to Lubis, the destructive actions reflect the lack
\nof legal education in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Irianto Subiakto of the Indonesian Legal Aid
\nFoundation told the Post that the media has played a significant
\nrole in fanning people's anger.<\/p>\n
\"I'm not blaming the media, but the attack was a result of
\ntheir publications,\" he said.<\/p>\n
City Councilors Mohammad Aman and Abdoelhamid Notowidagdo
\ncalled on the people to honor the presumption of innocence,
\nnoting that the suspects have yet to be found guilty by a court.
