A total of 25 Chinese photographers have been formally deported after\nbeing found to have misused their residence permits and Visa on Arrival\n(VOA) status in Indonesia, not for tourism but to work. The legal action\nwas enforced by the Directorate of Immigration Supervision and\nEnforcement of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, in synergy\nwith the Foreigner Supervision Team (PORA), which includes\nrepresentatives from the Ministry of Creative Economy.<\/p>\n
This was revealed during a meeting between Minister of Immigration\nand Corrections Agus Andrianto and Minister of Creative Economy Teuku\nRiefky Harsya at the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections office in\nJakarta on Tuesday (9\/6).<\/p>\n
\u201cOpen global collaboration must continue within the corridor of\norderly, healthy, and fair national regulations to protect local\ncreative economy players. We also need to maintain a healthy business\ncompetition climate for local industry players,\u201d said the Creative\nEconomy Minister.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Agus Andrianto stated his commitment to tightening\nsupervision and taking firm action against any misuse of residence\npermits by foreign nationals in the creative economy sector. \u201cForeign\nphotographers are permitted to carry out commercial activities in\nIndonesia as long as they comply with all statutory provisions,\nincluding licensing aspects, appropriate work visas, and compliance with\nlabour regulations,\u201d Agus Andrianto said.<\/p>\n
Teuku Riefky explained the high mobility of global talent amid the\ndevelopment of the world\u2019s digital economy. One impact has been reports\nfrom various professional associations regarding the misuse of residence\npermits by foreign nationals, some of whom were proven to be operating\nillegally in the domestic photography and videography subsectors.<\/p>\n
\u201cTheir non-compliance with immigration law has a direct and\nsignificant impact on the local creative market. This condition not only\naffects business competition due to unbalanced service rates, but also\ninfluences the sustainability of local creative players who are facing\nglobal competition, making this case a matter of common concern so it\ndoes not recur and harm Indonesia\u2019s creative ecosystem,\u201d said Teuku\nRiefky.<\/p>\n
Through this meeting, Teuku Riefky said, the two ministries agreed on\na strategic collaboration direction to build an integrated monitoring\nmechanism for creative economy activities involving foreign workers. The\nMinistry of Creative Economy is also expanding coordination with other\nsubsector associations such as music and Film-Animation-Video. In\naddition to law enforcement, both institutions will also promote\nprogrammes to strengthen education and literacy on immigration\nregulations for creative economy players and MSMEs to create a common\nunderstanding in the field.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Creative Economy also submitted a document containing\nconcrete evidence from reports by the Indonesian Photography\nProfessional Association (APFI), the Indonesian Documentation\nEntrepreneurs Association (HIPDI), and the Indonesia Professional\nPhotographer Association (IPPA), as well as representatives of national\nphotography industry practitioners. These practitioners included Tompi\nand Jerry Aurum, both photography activists.<\/p>\n
The concrete evidence from practitioners and associations formed the\nbasis for firm action against the foreign photographers.
