24 parties vow to maintain peace<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: All 24 political parties eligible to join the general
\nelection have signed a nine-point agreement to maintain peace
\nbefore, during and after the April 5 polls.<\/p>\n
The agreement was signed on Friday at the General Elections
\nCommission (KPU) building.<\/p>\n
The accord allows parties to conduct activities in all areas
\nin the country, obliges parties to respect press freedom and
\navoid bribing voters, election commissions, the supervisory
\ncommittee and monitors.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is to hold the legislative election on April 5 and
\npresidential election on July 5.<\/p>\n
The second phase of the presidential election would be held on
\nSept. 20 if no single candidate receives 51 percent of the vote.

DENPASAR, Bali: Inter-island trading in rare animals in
\nIndonesia is getting out of hand, therefore law-enforcement
\nagencies need to step up efforts to fight the illegal trade,
\nlocal conservationist I Wayan Wiradnyana said here on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Wayan said hundreds of rare animals such as orangutans,
\ngibbons, sloths, eagles and cockatoos were sent every week from
\nthe island of Sumatra to Java.<\/p>\n
Based on a study conducted by Wayan and his team in Medan,
\nBengkulu, Lampung, Kalimantan, Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali and Papua,
\nthe rare animals were transported by inter-city buses.<\/p>\n
Despite the Natural Resources Conservation Agency's efforts to
\nstop the inter-island trade in rare animals by keeping a close
\nwatch on people and cargo passing through bus terminals and
\nseaports, the illegal trade continued, Wayan said.<\/p>\n
He said that not only Jakarta but also Semarang and Surabaya
\non Java island were known as entry points for the transport of

JAKARTA: The Kakaban and Derawan Islands in Berau district,
\nEast Kalimantan, are being proposed as a world heritage site due
\nto their uniqueness, Kehati Foundation chairwoman Erna Witoelar
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"We are trying to win the status for the islands together with
\nthe government and the local people. Pak Rokhmin Dahuri
\n(fisheries and marine resources minister) has agreed to the
\ninitiative,\" she said on Friday.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Emil Salim, co-founder of the foundation, said the
\nKakaban and Derawan islands were unique in their marine
\nbiodiversity and formed by the earth's tectonic forces.<\/p>\n
Erna said, beside the islands, Tensenilo forest in Riau would
\nalso be proposed as a world heritage site for its myriad of
\nanimal and plant species.<\/p>\n
Of the six world heritage sites located in Indonesia, three
\nare nature reserves, namely Ujung Kulon in Banten, West Java,
\nKomodo Island in East Nusa Tenggara and the Lorentz Mountain
\nRange in Papua.<\/p>\n
The other three are cultural heritage sites, including the
\nBorobudur Temple in the Central Java regency of Magelang.<\/p>\n
A researcher with the development and environmental program of
\nUNESCO, Jan H. Steven, said each country was allowed to propose a
\nlocation to the UN body to be recognized as a world heritage
\nsite.<\/p>\n
The proposal must come from people living near the site, he

JAKARTA: The newly established Regional United Party (PPD)
\nvowed on Saturday to fight for free education for all, improved
\nhealth care and better regional welfare.<\/p>\n
During the party's meeting in the East Java town of Pasuruan
\non Saturday, chairman Oesman Sapta said the PPD was seeking the
\npeople's support in the upcoming elections in order to help them
\ndeal with their daily problems.<\/p>\n
\"PPD members will provide concrete solutions to the people's
\nproblems, wherever they are,\" Oesman told hundreds of party
\nmembers.<\/p>\n
The PPD is among 24 political parties that have been declared
\neligible to contest the general election on April 5.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, Oesman introduced the party's legislative
\ncandidates for East Java.<\/p>\n
Oesman was also scheduled to pay a visit to the grave of

BENGKULU, Bengkulu: The Attorney General's Office has returned
\nthe dossier on the May 1998 riots in Jakarta to the National
\nCommission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) for additional
\ninformation.<\/p>\n
Attorney General M.A. Rachman said on Saturday prosecutors
\nrequired more information regarding the commission's findings on
\nthe riots, which preceded the fall of long-time ruler Soeharto.<\/p>\n
\"The dossier from Komnas HAM needs revision, that is why we
\nreturned it to them,\" Rachman said in Bengkulu after opening a
\nseminar on corruption.<\/p>\n
Komnas HAM chairman Abdul Hakim Garuda Nusantara said earlier
\nthe commission had concluded that gross human rights violations
\ntook place during the three days of rioting in Jakarta in May
\n1998, which followed the shooting deaths of four Trisakti
\nUniversity students.<\/p>\n
The commission's inquiry team, led by Salahudin Wahid, had
\nsubmitted the dossier to the Attorney General's Office, which is
\nauthorized to launch a formal investigation of the riots.
