24 injured in latest train accident in South Jakarta<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): At least 24 people were injured in a head-on
\ncollision between a locomotive and an express train in Manggarai
\nsubdistrict in South Jakarta on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n
The accident damaged four of the express train's six cars.
\nFour of the injured were the drivers and assistants on the two
\ntrains.<\/p>\n
It was the second railway accident in two days after a fatal
\ntrain-bus collision in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, on Tuesday
\nevening.<\/p>\n
Most of the passengers of the express train, heading from
\nBekasi to Kota Station in West Jakarta, had alighted the train at
\nJatinegara Station in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The chief of Manggarai Station, Sugeng Setiono, said the
\nlocomotive's driver, identified as Tasrih, ignored a red light
\nand caused the accident.<\/p>\n
\"The accident happened at about 10:15 a.m.,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Sugeng said the locomotive, heading from Kota to Jatinegara,
\nhad stopped at a track in Manggarai to give way for an Argo Gede
\nexpress train bound for Bandung.<\/p>\n
\"After the Argo Gede passed along the track, this locomotive
\njust went on without obeying the red-light sign,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Tasrih and driver Tukirjo from the express train together with
\ntheir assistants, Soleh and Dirlan, were injured.<\/p>\n
Eight passengers in the train's first compartment were
\nadmitted to the emergency unit of the Cipto Mangunkusumo General
\nHospital in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
After being treated for several hours, four of the injured
\nwere discharged.<\/p>\n
Dr. B. Situmorang of the hospital's emergency unit said the
\nremaining four were seriously hurt. Most of them suffered broken
\nlegs.<\/p>\n
Passenger Endang Widuri, 18, had open wounds on her left leg
\nand a blood clot in her lungs.<\/p>\n
\"The blood in her lungs needs to be removed,\" Situmorang said.<\/p>\n
Three other injured, Yuniarti, Mega, and Ratnaningrum, all in
\ntheir 30s, are due to undergo surgery at the hospital.<\/p>\n
Twelve other passengers were treated for minor injuries at
\nTulus Kartika clinic in Bukit Duri in South Jakarta. Dr. Kesuma
\nMulya said they were permitted to leave after receiving
\ntreatment.<\/p>\n
Four others received medical treatment at the Air Force
\nHospital at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Investigation<\/p>\n
Separately, the chairman of state railway company PT KAI's
\noperations for Greater Jakarta, Masjraul Hidajat, said the cause
\nof the accident was unknown.<\/p>\n
\"We still have no idea whether it was caused by human error or
\na technical problem. We plan to send a team to investigate and
\nexamine all involved parties in relation to the accident,\"
\nMasjraul said at the accident site.<\/p>\n
But a train signal officer agreed with Sugeng that the CC
\n20320 locomotive ran the red signal.<\/p>\n
\"It was clearly visible from the control room that the
\nlocomotive moved before any order from the signal room,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Masjraul said PT KAI would cover the medical bills of the
\ninjured passengers.<\/p>\n
\"We will pay for the injured train employees and passengers,\"
\nhe said, adding that coverage by Jasa Raharja insurance company
\nwould also pay some of the medical expenses.<\/p>\n
He said the accident was similar to one last month in Tambun,
\nBekasi, when a locomotive collided with a Cirebon Express train.<\/p>\n
\"All employees here took part in training on train safety last
\nweek. And, then, this accident happens today,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"There are already standard procedures on the matter. You
\ndon't move when the light is red.\"<\/p>\n
In a fatal accident on Tuesday, eight personnel of the State
\nEmployees Administration Agency (BAKN) died and dozens suffered
\nsevere injuries when an intercity train crashed into their bus in
\nSouth Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The accident, which took place at the first U-turn after
\nPancasila University, reportedly occurred because an official at
\nthe railroad crossing failed to close the crossing gate despite a
