23rd Bali festival opens<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali (JP): In a ceremony marked by a colorful parade
\nof Balinese traditional arts, Vice President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri officially opened the 23rd Bali Arts Festival on
\nSaturday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Dressed in a blue Kebaya (traditional Indonesian costume) her
\narrival attracted a resounding welcome from the cheering
\nthousands who crowded the venue of the ceremony, Puputan
\nMargarana Square.<\/p>\n
Bali has long been known as a traditional stronghold of
\nMegawati supporters whose grandmother was Balinese.<\/p>\n
Megawati, accompanied by Minister of Home Affairs Surjadi
\nSudirdja and Bali Governor Dewa Made Beratha, waved in
\nacknowledgement of the overwhelming response she received.<\/p>\n
Though she declared the festival open, the Vice President did
\nnot deliver a speech.<\/p>\n
The festival, which will run until July 14, focuses on
\nnature's harmony.<\/p>\n
This year's festival, which will cost some Rp 1 billion, will
\ninvolve at least 170 performance groups with around 2,500 artists
\nfrom all over Bali.<\/p>\n
Some 124 events -- performances, exhibitions, seminars, and
\ncompetitions -- will be held over the next month.(zen)<\/p>",
