20 years sought for terror suspect<\/p>\n
SEMARANG: Prosecutors demanded on Thursday a 20-year jail term
\nfor each of four defendants standing trial for possession of
\nexplosives with which they had planned to launch terror attacks
\nacross the country.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors accused defendants Mahmudi Haryono, Joko
\nArdiyanto, Siswanto and Heri Suyatno with possession of 750
\nkilograms of explosives, thousands of rounds of ammunitions,
\nfirearms and hundreds of detonators. The huge arms cache was
\ndiscovered last July at their residence in Kalibanteng, western
\nSemarang.<\/p>\n
The defendants are being charged under Law No. 15\/2003 on
\nterrorism and the Criminal Code, which carry a maximum death
\nsentence.<\/p>\n
"The sentence demand is reasonable, as they took part in a
\ncrime that has caused widespread fear," prosecutor Gatot Gunarto
\ntold the court.<\/p>\n
Speaking after the hearing, defense lawyer Yasri Yudha Yahya
\nsaid the prosecution's demand lacked substantial evidence and was
\nemotional.<\/p>\n
"When presented with the evidence, the defendants stated
\nclearly that they did not recognize them. A number of witnesses
\nhave also corroborated their statements," he said.<\/p>\n

SEMARANG: House of Representatives legislator Alvin Lie from
\nthe National Mandate Party (PAN) ducked an attempt at fraud by a
\nbogus journalist when he appeared on Thursday at a local court to
\nbe tried for early campaigning.<\/p>\n
Alvin told reporters the extortion attempt took place just as
\nhe was leaving the courtroom.<\/p>\n
"I spotted this young man who did not interview me, but he
\napproached my wife and asked her for my name card. He said he
\nwanted to interview me, but after a lengthy talk, the
\nconversation went nowhere and I assumed that he just wanted
\nmoney," Alvin told Antara.<\/p>\n
When Alvin asked the bogus reporter for his identification, he
\npresented a press card and personal ID with a name, Widada.<\/p>\n
"But when I checked for the media Posisie Demokrasi Indonesia,
\nI found out it was fake and that his ID card had expired. I
\nchased him into the parking lot but he hopped on his motorbike
\nand fled," he said.<\/p>\n
He had phoned the number on the press card, only to discover
