20 students held for bus robbery<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police arrested 20 high school students on
\nSaturday for robbery, following a tip from a street musician who
\nwitnessed the crime.<\/p>\n
Police also seized machetes, sickles, knives, swords and
\nscrewdrivers from the suspects, who are accused of robbing the
\npassengers of a Mayasari bus traveling on Jl. Suprapto in Cempaka
\nPutih, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Kemayoran Police chief Adj. Comr. Herry Rudolf Nahak
\nidentified the suspects as students of a state high school and a
\nstate vocational high school on Jl. Boedi Oetomo in Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
The arrests were made possible by a tip from a street musician
\nwho saw the students threatening the passengers with sharp
\nweapons, Herry said.<\/p>\n
The officer said the suspects, some of whom were not wearing
\nschool uniforms, told police they boarded the bus at separate
\nlocations because bus drivers were often reluctant to stop for
\nlarge groups of students.<\/p>\n
Some of the suspects, Herry said, got on the Mayasari bus
\nplying the Tanah Abang-Pulogadung route at the Galur bus stop,
\nwhile others boarded at the Marjani stop, both within 200 meters
\nof each other on Jl. Suprapto.<\/p>\n
One of the bus passengers, Ikhsan, a resident of Cakung, East
\nJakarta, said the students began the robbery as the bus was
\npassing Yarsi University on Jl. Suprapto.<\/p>\n
He said two students threatened the bus driver with a sickle
\nand a knife, while other students, also armed with sharp weapons,
\nbegan collecting the passengers' belongings.<\/p>\n
\"Fortunately, a street musician saw the incident when the bus
\nstopped at the intersection to wait for the traffic light to turn
\ngreen,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The musician rushed to the nearby Cempaka Mas shopping center
\nand reported the incident to a police officer.<\/p>\n
Herry said some 20 Mobile Brigade police officers on duty at
\nthe shopping center then gave chase to the bus. He said a number
\nof the suspects panicked when the police stopped the bus, and
\ntried to hide their weapons beneath the seats.<\/p>\n
\"Searching their bags, we found several watches, cellular
\nphones, wallets and jewelry,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The officer declined to identify the street musician who
\nalerted the police because of safety concerns. (01)<\/p>",
