        "content": "<p>Garut Regency in West Java recorded 3,939 tuberculosis (TB) cases and\n20 deaths between January and May 2026 following screening of 24,648\nsuspected cases. The disease, which can severely affect the lungs,\nspreads through coughing and sneezing.<\/p>\n<p>Asep Surahman, Head of Disease Prevention and Control at Garut\nRegency Health Department, noted that TB cases have risen significantly,\nrequiring improved detection and reporting systems, including health\nworkers consistently wearing masks and personal protective equipment\n(PPE). However, cases increase annually due to public negligence in\nhygiene practices such as handwashing and social distancing.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018TB cases in Garut Regency have risen significantly each year since\n2025, with 9,823 confirmed cases, 56,821 suspects, and 182 deaths\nrecorded that year. However, this year\u2019s figures stand at 3,939\nconfirmed cases, 24,648 suspects, and 20 deaths,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>Surahman added that TB cases were found across all age groups,\npredominantly in productive age ranges of 0-4, 5-14, 15-24, and 25-34\nyears. Despite the rising cases causing 20 deaths, the Health Department\nis treating thousands of patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We urge the public to adhere to clean and healthy lifestyles, avoid\ncontact with TB patients, maintain immunity, balanced diets, and\nexercise. Residents are also advised to undergo regular health checks to\nprevent transmission,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n<p>As of 3 May 2026, Indonesia has recorded over 241,000 TB cases\nnationwide. The Health Department continues to strengthen collaboration\nwith health centres and various foundations to detect new cases early.\nAlongside active case detection, efforts include appropriate medication\nand preventive measures such as TB Preventive Therapy.<\/p>\n<p>The appointment of Dr Benyamin Paulus, a lung specialist, as deputy\nhealth minister brings new hope for TB management in Indonesia. The\ncentral government plans to provide X-ray machines to all districts and\ncities across Indonesia.<\/p>",
