2 nabbed in connection with FPI shooting<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police detectives from Central Jakarta arrested
\ntwo men believed to have shot dead a senior figure of the Islam
\nDefenders Front (FPI) here about seven weeks ago.<\/p>\n
Police identified one of the suspects as Muchdar, a nephew of
\nthe victim Saleh bin Abdullah Alatas.<\/p>\n
Central Jakarta Police chief Sr. Supt. Adjie Rustam Ramdja
\ntold reporters on Tuesday that Muchdar was arrested in
\nPandeglang, West Java, on Monday morning, while his accomplice,
\nMassurul, a street vendor in Slipi, West Jakarta, was arrested on
\nthe following day in Slipi.<\/p>\n
The police confiscated an FN 45-millimeter caliber gun along
\nwith 75 bullets from Muchdar, who claimed to have purchased it
\nfrom a retired military officer.<\/p>\n
Based on the police findings so far, Adjie concluded that the
\ntwo were the only perpetrators in the killing of Alatas on July
\n23, which allegedly took place after a family dispute over a plot
\nof land and a house on Jl. Percetakan Negara IX Blok MI\/6.<\/p>\n
The house and land belonged to the parents of Alatas, Adjie
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The dispute occurred after the Central Jakarta District Court
\nrecently issued a ruling in favor of Muchdar's ownership of the
\nland. The court's verdict was later upheld by the Jakarta High
\nCourt.<\/p>\n
According to Adjie, Muchdar was upset with his uncle, Alatas,
\nsaying that the latter had always prevented him from taking
\nownership of the land.<\/p>\n
In July, for example, Alatas -- under the escort of several
\nFPI members -- held a mass prayer at the disputed site when the
\nstaff of the district court attempted to execute its verdict,
\nbased on the High Court's decision of July 13, 2000.<\/p>\n
During questioning, the two suspects admitted to have carried
\nout the execution.<\/p>\n
Alatas was shot by two men on a motorcycle in front of his
\nhouse on Jl. Percetakan Negara, when he was about to perform his
\nSubuh (predawn) prayer at a nearby An-Noor mosque.<\/p>\n
After the shooting, the two managed to escape but the police
\ntracked them down, said Adjie.<\/p>\n
The police learned from Massurul that he was willing to help
\nMuchdar, who often helped him financially, to kill the victim
\nwithout receiving any payment.<\/p>\n
\"Massurul rendered his help as a way to repay Muchdar's
\nkindness,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"The killing was meticulously planned by the two and they
\ncould be charged with the maximum punishment of a death
\nsentence,\" Adjie said. (lup)<\/p>",
