Over 2 million vehicles have exited Jakarta by early Sunday, representing nearly 57% of the projected Eid exodus traffic, with police reporting a generally safe situation marred by 292 traffic accidents resulting in 8 deaths and significant injuries. Authorities are urging the public to prioritise safety during travel and tourism, especially at water attractions, and to stagger return journeys using work-from-anywhere policies to avoid congestion, supported by government toll discounts on 26-27 March. The peak return flow is anticipated on 24 March and 28-29 March, as police wish everyone a safe and joyful Eid al-Fitr.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Police recorded 2,007,253 vehicles leaving
Jakarta up to Sunday (22/3/2026) at 06:00 WIB. This figure equates to
56.9 percent of the total projected vehicle movement during this year’s
Eid homecoming exodus. “Vehicle movement indicates that the homecoming
flow is still ongoing,” said Spokesperson for the Public Relations Task
Force of Operation Ketupat 2026, Kombes Marupa Sagala, in his statement
on Sunday. Overall, Marupa continued, the public security and order
situation is reported to be safe and conducive, with no notable
incidents. “There were 292 recorded traffic accidents, with details of 8
fatalities, 60 serious injuries, 489 minor injuries, and material losses
exceeding Rp 206 million,” he revealed. Marupa advised the public to
continue prioritising safety during journeys, including while holidaying
during the Eid break. Police specifically urged those planning to visit
water tourism spots such as beaches, rivers, or swimming pools. “We
remind managers and the public to always consider carrying capacity and
prioritise safety, so that tourism activities can proceed safely and
comfortably,” he said. Marupa invited the public to schedule their
return journeys to avoid vehicle build-ups. “The public is also advised
to take advantage of the work from anywhere or WFA policy, so that
return journeys can be carried out gradually and not piled up at once,”
he said. In addition, the government is providing incentives in the form
of toll fee discounts applicable from 26 to 27 March 2026. This policy
is hoped to help the public manage travel times more efficiently and
reduce density. Police predict the peak of the Eid return flow will
occur on 24 March and 28 to 29 March 2026. At the end of his statement,
Marupa also extended Eid al-Fitr greetings to the public and hoped that
homecoming and return journeys would proceed safely and smoothly. “We
extend Eid al-Fitr greetings for gathering with family on this festive
occasion. May the public’s journeys be safe, smooth, and full of
happiness,” he concluded.
",
