$189m for business training for the poor<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government has linked up with private
\nuniversities across the country to provide training on
\nentrepreneurship to the poor, a senior official said yesterday.<\/p>\n
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the National
\nFamily Planning Board, the Ministry of Education and Culture and
\nprivate universities in September last year.<\/p>\n
Planning board chairman Haryono Suyono said the program aimed
\nto develop and encourage entrepreneurship among low income groups
\nand increase the role of women in development.<\/p>\n
Haryono said the program was expected to help raise their
\nliving standards and self-reliance while the university students
\ncould apply their knowledge in the field and gain work
\nexperience.<\/p>\n
He said the government allocated Rp 450 billion (US$189
\nmillion) for the project that would last until the year 2004.<\/p>\n
He said once successful, participants would be rewarded with a
\ncertificate and offered access to bank credit.<\/p>\n
Haryono said in addition to the funding, President Soeharto
\nhad approved from Rp 300 billion to 400 billion annually to be
\nchanneled through non-budgetary expenditures to rural
\ninhabitants.<\/p>\n
The program would teach applied sciences, simple management,
\npractical skills development, preparing for entrepreneurship and
\ninternship, he said.<\/p>\n
He urged entrepreneurs to remain on the alert for
\nopportunities, challenges and continuous innovation.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's low income earners total 22 million while two-
\nthirds of the country's workforce was unemployed and the
\nremaining one-third was employed, Haryono said.<\/p>\n
Another speaker, director of private universities, Joetata
\nHadihardaya said a total of 1.5 million students and a total of
\n100,000 professors from state and private universities throughout
\nIndonesia would also participate in the program. (01)<\/p>",
