18 legislators to screen KPK aspirants<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Eighteen legislators have been assigned to examine
\nthe track records of 10 candidates aspiring to gain five seats in
\nthe planned Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).<\/p>\n
A. Teras Narang, chairman of the House of Representatives'
\nCommission II for legal and home affairs, said on Wednesday that
\nthe lawmakers would be split into five teams, each investigating
\ntwo candidates.<\/p>\n
"We will visit their residences and each candidate must fill
\nout wealth reports, which will be cross-examined on Monday and
\nTuesday," Teras Narang said.<\/p>\n
President Megawati Soekarnoputri submitted the names of 10
\ncandidates to the House, which is to select five as leaders of
\nthe planned anticorruption body to be set up later this month.<\/p>\n
Teras Narang said the House would also require each candidate
\nto sign a statement declaring that they had never been involved
\nin any corrupt practices.<\/p>\n
The candidates will be interviewed by legislators in sessions
\nopen to the public. Teras Narang also said he could not guarantee
\nthat legislators would put aside their political interests in the
\nselection of candidates.<\/p>\n
The KPK has the authority to investigate corruption cases and
\nprosecute alleged corrupters. Currently it is the police and
\nprosecutors who have such authority. -- JP<\/p>",
