        "content": "<p>18 legislators to screen KPK aspirants<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: Eighteen legislators have been assigned to examine<br>\nthe track records of 10 candidates aspiring to gain five seats in<br>\nthe planned Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).<\/p>\n<p>A. Teras Narang, chairman of the House of Representatives&apos;<br>\nCommission II for legal and home affairs, said on Wednesday that<br>\nthe lawmakers would be split into five teams, each investigating<br>\ntwo candidates.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We will visit their residences and each candidate must fill<br>\nout wealth reports, which will be cross-examined on Monday and<br>\nTuesday,&quot; Teras Narang said.<\/p>\n<p>President Megawati Soekarnoputri submitted the names of 10<br>\ncandidates to the House, which is to select five as leaders of<br>\nthe planned anticorruption body to be set up later this month.<\/p>\n<p>Teras Narang said the House would also require each candidate<br>\nto sign a statement declaring that they had never been involved<br>\nin any corrupt practices.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates will be interviewed by legislators in sessions<br>\nopen to the public. Teras Narang also said he could not guarantee<br>\nthat legislators would put aside their political interests in the<br>\nselection of candidates.<\/p>\n<p>The KPK has the authority to investigate corruption cases and<br>\nprosecute alleged corrupters.
