18 candidates in race for Tangerang mayor<\/p>\n
TANGERANG: A total of 18 mayoral and 16 deputy mayoral
\ncandidates in Tangerang municipality will contest the elections
\nfor the 2003-2008 period.<\/p>\n
The elections will be held before the end of November at the
\nMunicipal Council building on Jl. Satria Sudirman, Tangerang.<\/p>\n
Some 53 people took registration forms but only 38 had
\nreturned them by Saturday's deadline. Four of the 38 were
\ndeclared ineligible as they failed to submit the necessary
\ndocuments, which included a medical certificate stating that they
\nwere not on drugs.<\/p>\n
Many people turned up at the council building on Saturday to
\nsee the candidates submit their forms.<\/p>\n
\"I came here to see who was standing for election. We hope
\nthat whoever is elected mayor will be the best choice for
\nTangerang municipality,\" said one visitor.<\/p>\n
The council building was guarded by officers from the
\nTangerang Police as well as security guards.<\/p>\n
Council deputy speaker Krisna Gunata said that security had
\nbeen tightened to avoid any disruption during the closed-door
\nselection process, which will start on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Some non-governmental organizations have erected banners
\noutside the council building warning councillors to shun money
\npolitics and bribery attempts during the elections.<\/p>\n
\"The Tangerang people will hang any councillors found guilty
\nof being involved in money politics during the election process,\"
\nsaid Ibnu Jandi, the director of the Public Studies Institute. --
