17 Papuan activists stage hunger strike<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA: Seventeen activists grouped in the Papuan Solidarity
\nfor Abepura group continued their hunger strike on Wednesday as
\npart of the efforts to seek justice for the victims of the
\nAbepura incident.<\/p>\n
The protesters, who have been on hunger strike for three
\nconsecutive days, have rolled out their mats in front of the
\nPapua legislative council building and unfurled banners demanding
\nthat a human rights tribunal in Makassar, South Sulawesi, imposes
\nthe severest possible sentences on those responsible for the
\nalleged rights violations in Abepura.<\/p>\n
The Makassar tribunal is slated to hand down its verdict on
\nThursday and Friday on the two defendants in the case -- the then
\ncommander of the Jayapura Police's Mobile Brigade unit, Brig.
\nGen. Johny Wainal Usman, and the then Jayapura Municipal Police
\nchief, Adj. Sr. Comr. Daud Sihombing.<\/p>\n
The two are charged with command responsibility for human
\nrights violations in Abepura town, which is near Jayapura, on
\nDecember 7, 2000. The rights violations were allegedly committed
\nby their subordinates during searches in an Abepura neighborhood
\nafter local residents attacked and set fire to an Abepura police
\nsubprecinct headquarters. Three Papuans were killed as police
\nofficers rampaged through the area. -- JP<\/p>",
