17 maids have died abroad<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Seventeen Indonesian housemaids died abroad
\nwhile 46 others were either tortured or sexually abused over the
\npast year, a report said.<\/p>\n
The report, compiled by Solidaritas Perempuan (Women's
\nSolidarity), a non-governmental organization for the protection
\nof Indonesian women's rights, said the housemaids worked in
\nMalaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Saudi
\nArabia and Lebanon.<\/p>\n
Chairperson Tati Krisnawaty said that two female workers died
\nafter they fell from their employers' apartments in Singapore.<\/p>\n
One worker was burned to death in Hong Kong, another died of
\nan unspecified accident in Malaysia and the other, Solihah, was
\nbeheaded in Saudi Arabia in October for killing her employer.<\/p>\n
Tati said the cause of the deaths of the other 12 women
\nremained unknown as the organization failed to obtain the
\ninformation from related authorities of the countries where they
\nworked.<\/p>\n
\"Violence against Indonesian female workers abroad was
\n'systematic' and yet the government failed to undertake a
\nfundamental effort to protect female migrant workers,\" she said.<\/p>\n
She also condemned the employers, who had violently
\nintimidated the workers, robbed them of their rights, physically
\nand sexually harassed them and, in some cases, raped them.<\/p>\n
\"This violence against female workers caused both physical and
\npsychological scars, shocked them and even ended in their death,\"
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
Tati's statement coincides with the International Anti-
\nViolence Against Women Day, which falls today. (09)<\/p>",
