17 killed truck accident in E. Timor<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): At least 17 people were killed when a truck
\ncarrying dozens of people plunged into a ravine in the East Timor
\ndistrict of Ermera yesterday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Dozens of other passengers suffering both serious and light
\ninjuries have been taken to the Ermera health clinic for
\ntreatment.<\/p>\n
As of last night, Ermera police and health officers were still
\nat the accident scene trying to determine the exact number of
\ncasualties, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
The truck was carrying people home from a pilgrimage service
\non Mt. Ramelau when it plunged into a ravine in the village of
\nLedeluli in the subdistrict of Letefoho.<\/p>\n
The ravine is estimated to be about 25 meter deep.<\/p>\n
Some locals said there had been many serious accidents along
\nthe Ermera-Letefoho-Ainaro route because of the narrowness of the
\nroad and the deep ravine on the left.<\/p>\n
Tens of thousands of Catholics from East Timor and neighboring
\nEast Nusa Tenggara climbed the mountain to gather for an annual
\nmass.<\/p>\n
This year's mass was led by Dili Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes
\nBelo and Baucau Bishop Basilio do Nascimento. (swe)<\/p>",
