        "content": "<p>1.6m await cataract operations<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Some 1.6 million cataract patients in Indonesia<br>\ncannot have operations because they do not have the money,<br>\nMinister of Health Sujudi said.<\/p>\n<p>And the list is getting longer each year, Sujudi told<br>\nreporters after opening the 8th International Cataract Conference<br>\nin Denpasar, Bali, on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that Indonesia receives 250,000 new cataract<br>\npatients each year. On average only about 50,000 of them can<br>\nafford the operations, Antara reported.<\/p>\n<p>The government, he said, is working with various private<br>\ncharity organizations to help poor patients. He cited the Darmais<br>\nFoundation as one of the groups active in sponsoring cataract<br>\noperations for the poor.<\/p>\n<p>Sujudi said that cataract operations require sustained medical<br>\ncare and special glasses, both of which are more than most can<br>\nafford. Only about five percent of all cataract sufferers have<br>\nthe financial means for the necessary operations.<\/p>\n<p>The rest, he added, have to rely on social charity.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said he hoped the three-day conference in Bali<br>\nwould come up with ways of reducing the costs of handling<br>\ncataract patients.<\/p>\n<p>Participants to the conference include experts and doctors<br>\nfrom the United States, Japan, Australia, Singapore, India,<br>\nMalaysia and host Indonesia.
