167 school children poisoned in C. Java<\/p>\n
PURWOKERTO, Central Java (JP): At least 167 school children
\nwere admitted to hospitals and subdistrict health care units here
\nover the weekend after eating poisoned food.<\/p>\n
The head of the Banyumas health office, Mambodiyanto, told The
\nJakarta Post yesterday that the students were recovering but
\nwould need a few more days rest.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said that 180 pupils from the Pamijen II primary
\nschool in Sokaraja district ate bean porridge cooked by Siti
\nRohani, the wife of a local village secretary, and her two Family
\nWelfare Movement colleagues, Nani Rohani and Lasiwen.<\/p>\n
The porridge, which had been cooked four hours previously, was
\nstored in plastic wrap-covered glasses.<\/p>\n
Shortly after eating the porridge, many of the students began
\nvomiting. As the children began to panic, their teachers tried to
\nadminister first aid by giving them coconut water to drink.<\/p>\n
The meals were provided as part of a supplementary food
\nprogram set up by the government to help the children's growth
\nand development.<\/p>\n
It targets 1,365 elementary schools in 635 least-developed
\nvillages, with each school having about 300 students.<\/p>\n
The program, paid for by a special fund and established by a
\nPresidential instruction, provides free school meals three times
\na week.<\/p>\n
Banyumas police chief Lt. Col. Agus Yudharto said the police
\nhad questioned the three cooks and the bean seller. The police
\nconfiscated the cooking utensils and a porridge sample for
\nfurther investigation.<\/p>\n
No one has been arrested yet.<\/p>\n
It was the second such major incident since the supplementary
\nfood program was launched early last April.<\/p>\n
The first came on April 17 when 192 students at the Sabuk
\nIndah primary school in Bandarlampung, Lampung, were
\nhospitalized. Three of them were flown to Jakarta's Cipto
\nMangunkusumo for intensive medical care.<\/p>\n
