        "content": "<p>164 protected animals seized from man in Bali<\/p>\n<p>Wahyoe Boediwardhana, Denpasar<\/p>\n<p>The Bali Natural Resources Conservation Body (BKSDA) raided on<br>\nFriday four separate houses and a meat processing factory in<br>\nSanur and Denpasar and seized 164 rare species in what is<br>\nbelieved to be the single largest seizure of rare animals in Bali<br>\nto date.<\/p>\n<p>All the rare species -- including lions, tigers and crocodiles<br>\n-- belonged to one person, Kuskamto, a well-known processed meat<br>\nbusinessman in Bali.<\/p>\n<p>The high-powered BKSDA team -- with 40 personnel and six<br>\ntrucks and led by veterinarian Wita Widiadani -- seized the rare<br>\nand protected animals from Sukamto's four houses in the Sanur<br>\narea and downtown Denpasar. While the rest were taken from<br>\nKuskamto's meat factory on Jl. Diponegoro.<\/p>\n<p>Following the confiscation, the BKSDA took the animals to its<br>\n30-hectare Animal Rehabilitation Center in Tabanan, Bali.<\/p>\n<p>\"At the center, the rare animals will have proper medical<br>\ntreatment,\" said Wayan Wirayatna, the coordinator of animal<br>\nrights group Pro Fauna in Bali, who took part in the raid.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Kuskamto claimed that he was not guilty. He<br>\ninsisted that he had proper licenses from the BKSDA to raise the<br>\nprotected animals. He admitted, though, that some of the licenses<br>\nhad expired, but he intended to renew them soon.<\/p>\n<p>Wayan said that if the businessman were proven guilty, he<br>\ncould be sentenced to five years in jail or fined Rp 100 million<br>\n(US$ 10.526) for violating Law No.5\/1990 on the Conservation of<br>\nNatural Resources and its Ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>Before the raid on Friday, the BKSDA had only seized between<br>\ntwo to five protected animals, on average, per month from various<br>\ngroups and individuals in Bali.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the rare animals seized from Kuskamto<\/p>\n<p>- lions              (panthera leo)<\/p>\n<p>- tigers             (panthera tigris)<\/p>\n<p>- ligers             (crossed breeding between lion and tiger)<\/p>\n<p>- honey bears        (helarctos malaynus)<\/p>\n<p>- orangutans         (pongo pygmaeus mawas)<\/p>\n<p>- crocodiles         (crocodylus novaeguinaeae)<\/p>\n<p>- Nias myna birds    (Gracula religiosa robusta)<\/p>\n<p>- Flores myna birds  (Gracula religiosa mertensi)<\/p>\n<p>- pythons            (python molurus)<\/p>\n<p>- deers              (cervus timorensis)<\/p>\n<p>- sea hawks          (pandionidae)<\/p>\n<p>source: Bali BKSDA<\/p>",
