1,600 factories guilty of dumping toxic waste<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta City Deputy Governor for Economic and
\nDevelopment Affairs Tb. M. Rais said yesterday that at least
\n1,600 factories in Jakarta are guilty of dumping poisonous waste.<\/p>\n
\"Considering the figure, there is a lot that we must do,\" Rais
\nadmitted.<\/p>\n
Rais was speaking during a signing ceremony of a document
\naffirming a commitment on proper waste management between
\nindustrial companies and the Environmental Impact Management
\nAgency (Bapedal).<\/p>\n
At least 100 big industries in Jakarta and surrounding areas,
\nincluding Texmaco, Argo Pantes, Garuda Indonesia and Chandra
\nAsri, have signed the pledge to obey government regulations on
\npoisonous waste management.<\/p>\n
During the past 25 years many structural changes have taken
\nplace, including in the social, economic and physical
\nenvironments, Rais said.<\/p>\n
\"But frankly speaking we have to admit that progress in one
\narea has not yet produced an agreeable picture in other fields,
\nparticularly that of the environment. We have felt the effect of
\nair pollution caused by traffic. And from the media we learn that
\ncertain places are running out of water. In addition, we have
\nwater pollution in Jakarta's rivers. These things give us cause
\nfor concern,\" Rais said.<\/p>\n
Rais added that the pollution problem in Jakarta is growing
\nexponentially.<\/p>\n
The document, according to Rais, will help local
\nadministrations and related institutions speed up the process of
\nmanaging poisonous waste in the city.<\/p>\n
Bapedal chairman Nabiel Makarim said that the pledge was a
\nresult of the \"partnership approach\" outlined by the Ministry of
\nEnvironment to ensure the implementation of the existing
\nregulations on waste management.<\/p>\n
\"For those who refuse to accept the policy we will take the
\nlegal approach,\" Nabiel promised.<\/p>\n
Minister of Environment Sarwono Kusumaatmadja said that big
\ncompanies in Jakarta, Bandung and their surrounds must complete
\ntheir hazardous waste treatment plants by December this year.<\/p>\n
\"The government will bring any companies violating the
\ngovernment decree on hazardous waste management into court if
\nthey fail to have waste treatment facilities by December this
\nyear,\" he told reporters.<\/p>\n
PT PPLI<\/p>\n
The general director of the state-owned aircraft company IPTN,
\nA. Widyanarso Doeriat, said IPTN has negotiated for certain
\ncategories of its waste products to be treated by the PT Prasadha
\nPamunah Limbah Industri (PPLI), a waste treatment company jointly
\nowned by Waste Management International of Britain, and PT
\nBimantara Citra, a private firm owned by Bambang Trihatmodjo and
\nthe Bapedal.<\/p>\n
PPLI, which began operating in January last year, is located
\nin Cileungsi, West Java. It is the first plant of its kind in
\nIndonesia and reportedly the largest in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n
\"We send our waste to PPLI because we cannot treat the waste
\nourselves. Besides, it is more economical,\" Doeriat said, adding
\nthat the cost is being negotiated. (01)<\/p>",
