16 people named as 'agitators'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city police named yesterday 16 people as
\nsuspected agitators of the mid-May riots.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang told journalists
\nthe suspects were among the 36 people who had been wanted by the
\npolice for their alleged role in instigating mobs to destroy and
\nburn and loot properties during the May 13 to May 15 unrest in
\nthe capital.<\/p>\n
\"We arrested these 16 suspected agitators between July and
\nAugust based on the testimonies of 1,919 looters netted during
\nand after the riots,\" Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
Of the sixteen suspects, three would be brought to trial soon
\nas their dossiers had been handed over to the prosecutor's
\noffice, he said.<\/p>\n
\"The dossiers of the other suspects are still being prepared,\"
\nthe officer added.<\/p>\n
Aritonang identified the suspects as Belek, Edi Siswanto,
\nMatsroji, Agustinus, Epon, Sukarman, Subur, Matsari, Teguh, Yadi,
\nSofyan Arief, Sofran, Iwan Supriyatna, Ali Sofyan, Anton Medan
\nand Rizal.<\/p>\n
Of the 16, only the last two have not been detained because
\ntheir relatives guaranteed they would not flee, he said.<\/p>\n
The remaining suspects have all admitted the crimes, Aritonang
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Belek and Edi confessed to instigating the crowds to destroy
\nand torch the Matraman Police station in East Jakarta, he said.<\/p>\n
Matsjori admitted his role in the looting and arson at Plaza
\nSentral shopping center in Klender, East Jakarta, while Agustinus
\nand Epon owned up to burning the Pasar Rumput Police post in
\nSouth Jakarta, the officer said.<\/p>\n
Duet Sukarman and Subur said they agitated crowds to rob and
\ndestroy Bank BCA in Muara Karang, Kapuk, North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Matsari admitted that he led an angry mob to loot and set
\nablaze the Naga shopping mall in Pondok Ungu in Bekasi and Teguh
\nconfessed to similar offenses at properties along Jl. Margonda
\nRaya in Depok, Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
Yadi, Ali and Sofyan Arief reportedly said they masterminded
\nthe burning of the Megaria Police post in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Sofran and Iwan allegedly said they provoked people to destroy
\nthe Mitsubishi show room on Jl. Raya Ciputat, South Jakarta.
