16 ITB students suspended<\/p>\n
BANDUNG (JP): Sixteen university students of the prestigious
\nBandung Institute of Technology (ITB) have been suspended for
\ntaking part in the initiation week that led to the death of a
\nfirst-year student early this year.<\/p>\n
Three of the students were suspended for two semesters, with
\nthe other 13 for one semester each, beginning in the first term
\nof the 1996\/1997 academic year which has just begun.<\/p>\n
When the suspension period is completed, the students will
\nface one probational semester.<\/p>\n
\"The suspension notice was signed on Sept. 10, but I did not
\nreceive the notice until Sept. 16,\" Ida Bagus Made, who is being
\nsuspended for one semester, said.<\/p>\n
Zaki Tiffany Lazuardian, an 18-year-old freshman at the
\ndepartment of physics, died early last month after joining the
\nrigorous 12-day initiation period organized by his seniors in the
\ndepartment.<\/p>\n
At least two other students had to be hospitalized, while the
\ninstitute's polyclinic reported that 176 first-year students
\nsought medical treatment after taking part in the initiation
\nweek.<\/p>\n
Two students, M. Ridjal and Budi Sumarso, were expelled from
\nthe university for reportedly going beyond the normal procedures
\nof initiation week by forcing exhausted first-year students to
\neat grass and do strenuous physical exercises.<\/p>\n
Budi is filing a lawsuit over his dismissal at the Bandung
\nState Administrative Court. The first hearing was scheduled for
\ntoday.<\/p>\n
The institute's officials held a meeting yesterday to discuss
\nthe latest developments. It was attended by, among others, chair
\nof the disciplinary commission Pingkan and deputy rector for
\ncommunication and culture Tresna Darmawan.<\/p>\n
They declined to explain specifically what they discussed.
\n\"If you want information about the meeting, please contact the
\ndeputy rector in charge of student affairs, Indra Djati Sidi,\"
\nDarmawan said.<\/p>\n
Indra was not available for comment. His staff said he was not
