        "content": "<p>16 anticorruption commission candidates chosen for shortlist<\/p>\n<p>Muninggar Sri Saraswati, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Anticorruption watchdog leaders are among the 16 candidates of<br>\nthe Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leaders who will<br>\nundergo the final selection assessments on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Romli Atmasasmita, the selection committee chairman, announced<br>\non Tuesday the last 16 candidates who were shortlisted from 29<br>\npeople who underwent a series of administrative, capability and<br>\nintegrity evaluations.<\/p>\n<p>Transparency International Indonesia chairman Erry Riyana<br>\nHardjapamekas, anticorruption lawyers Iskandar Sonhadji and<br>\nBambang Widjojanto, senior prosecutor M. Yamin, and members of<br>\nthe State Official Wealth Audit Commission (KPKPN) Chairul Umam<br>\nand Momo Kelana were on the list of the last 16 candidates<br>\nannounced by the selection committee chairman Romli Atmasasmita<br>\non Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\"They qualified based on their performance, track record and<br>\nexperience (in combating corruption). We have no other<br>\ninterests,\" he told reporters, without elaborating on the<br>\nparameters used by the selection committee to whittle down the<br>\nnumber.<\/p>\n<p>During the final evaluation day on Thursday, the KPK selection<br>\ncommittee will select 10 candidates, who will be presented to the<br>\nPresident for approval on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The president, who has no right to veto the selected<br>\ncandidates, is expected to submit the names to the House of<br>\nRepresentatives on Dec. 12. It will be the House that will choose<br>\nthe final five members of KPK, which will have to start working<br>\nby Dec. 27.<\/p>\n<p>The interviews of the 16 candidates at the Ministry of Justice<br>\nand Human Rights on Thursday will be open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, the Coalition of the Judiciary Observers<br>\ncriticized the committee for picking several candidates with<br>\nquestionable track records for the short list.<\/p>\n<p>\"We don't know how or why they picked a candidate who was<br>\ndismissed as a prosecutor due to ethical problems,\" Asep Rahmat<br>\nFajar lamented.<\/p>\n<p>The coalition was also shocked that several candidates were<br>\npicked who had a host of irregularities on their wealth reports<br>\nlast year, prosecutors who have dropped charges under suspicious<br>\ncircumstances against corruption defendants as well as those who<br>\nhave links to the political elite.<\/p>\n<p>\"About half of the (remaining 16) candidates are not fit to<br>\nsit on the body,\" Asep said, expressing his pessimism that the<br>\nselection committee would manage to submit credible candidates to<br>\nthe President.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its criticism, the coalition supported the selection<br>\ncommittee's promise to choose only the best candidates Megawati's<br>\nperusal.<\/p>\n<p>\"If they manage to only select seven candidates, so be it,\"<br>\nAsep said.<\/p>\n<p>The establishment of KPK, which has been postponed several<br>\ntimes since 1999 due to the government's failure to comply with<br>\nthe law on corruption eradication, is expected to help the<br>\ncountry curb corruption.<\/p>\n<p>KPK is dubbed a \"super body,\" as its authority will include<br>\ninvestigation and prosecution of corrupters, which is currently<br>\nthe sole domain of the police and prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>It will also have the authority to take over the investigation<br>\nand prosecution of corruption cases from the police and<br>\nprosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>No significant achievements have been made since the students<br>\nbegan their campaign against corruption, collusion and nepotism<br>\nat the beginning of the reform movement in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has regularly been recognized internationally as one<br>\nof the world's most corrupt countries.<\/p>\n<p>The survey by Berlin-based Transparency International (TI) has<br>\nrated corruption index in Indonesia at 1.9, out of possible 10.<\/p>\n<p>KPK executive body candidates        current job<\/p>\n<p>1.
