1,500 shanties face demolition<\/p>\n
The West Jakarta mayoralty administration is threatening to
\ndemolish 1,500 shanties built without permits along the Cisadane
\nriverbank.<\/p>\n
The head of the mayoralty Security and Public Order Office,
\nH. Karsidin, said that he had given the owners until the end of
\nOctober to tear down the shanties or face demolition.<\/p>\n
Karsidin was quoted by Antara as saying over the weekend that
\nthe mayoralty administration in April issued a demolition order,
\nwhich notified the owners to move to elsewhere within a week.<\/p>\n
In order to enable the owners to find other places, the
\nmayoralty administration has postponed the deadline until the end
\nof October.<\/p>\n
\"We hope that the owners voluntarily dismantle their houses
\nand move to other areas at their own accord within the new
\ndeadline because we have given them ample time,\" Karsidin said.<\/p>\n
The shanties which will be affected are located in seven
\nsubdistricts in the mayoralty, including Semanan, Duri Kosambi,
\nRawa Buaya, Kedaung-Kaliangke, North Kedoya, Kapuk and Angke.<\/p>\n
Karsidin said his office also plans to clean sidewalks and
\nstreets around the Trisakti University, the Tarumanegara
\nUniversity and the Citraland Mall shopping center in Grogol from
\nvendors.<\/p>\n
According to Karsidin in the future motorists will not be
\nallowed to park their vehicles on the aforesaid areas. (arf)<\/p>",
