        "content": "<p>15 NGOs establish new antiporn society<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Fifteen nongovernmental organizations founded<br>\nthe Anti-Pornographic Society (MTP) on Wednesday in an effort to<br>\ncurb pornographic images in the media.<\/p>\n<p>The organization was formed by, among others, the National<br>\nIndonesian Youth Committee (KNPI), Center of Law Advocacy and<br>\nHuman Rights (PAHAM), Indonesian Muslim Student Action Front<br>\n(KAMMI) and the Media Watch and Consumer Center (MWCC).<\/p>\n<p>MTP board member, film director Chaerul Umam, said that<br>\npornography in the print and electronic media had reached an<br>\nalarming level.<\/p>\n<p>\"I can't even watch TV with my kids without feeling awkward<br>\nwhen commercials with pornographic scenes are shown,\" Chaerul<br>\ntold The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n<p>Other members of MTP's board include political observer Imam<br>\nB. Prasodjo and TV host Ferrasta Soebardi, popularly known as<br>\nPepeng.<\/p>\n<p>The country, especially the capital, has witnessed an<br>\nincreasing amount of publications that feature semipornographic<br>\npictures and stories.<\/p>\n<p>The South Jakarta District Court last month sentenced chief<br>\neditor of Matra monthly, Robertus Riantiarno, to a five-month<br>\nsuspended jail term for publishing semipornographic pictures in<br>\nits June and July editions last year.<\/p>\n<p>Many other publications, however -- particularly tabloids --<br>\ncontinue to run far more potentially offensive pictures and<br>\nstories, which flood newsstands in the city without any<br>\nsignificant action from the authorities.<\/p>\n<p>MTP secretary Azimah Sobagjo said the organization had already<br>\nmade a detailed plan to launch its mission, which includes a<br>\nproposal to draft an antipornography law.<\/p>\n<p>\"The draft requires, among other things, a clear definition on<br>\nmaterials that are (legally) considered pornographic,\" Azimah<br>\ntold the Post.<\/p>\n<p>She said that in her view all materials capable of inducing<br>\nsexual arousal should be considered as pornography.<\/p>\n<p>In its statement, MTP also complained about the \"true\" first-<br>\nperson accounts of rape victims in some media, saying that they<br>\nwere solely intended to arouse readers.<\/p>\n<p>MTP chairwoman Nur Indrawati Pari said that her new<br>\norganization was ready to file complaints to the publishers of<br>\nmagazines and newspapers that feature pornography.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are also ready to launch a campaign to mold public opinion<br>\nagainst pornography,\" Nur said.<\/p>\n<p>Another antipornography association, the Indonesian Society<br>\nAgainst Piracy and Pornography (MAPPI), was launched on Jan. 24.<\/p>\n<p>The organization is chaired by Abdul Wahid Aziz Bisri, who is<br>\nalso chairman of the Jakarta chapter of the Jami'a Nahdlatul<br>\nUlama Muslim organization and a cousin of President Abdurrahman<br>\nWahid.(08)<\/p>",
