15 NGOs establish new antiporn society<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Fifteen nongovernmental organizations founded
\nthe Anti-Pornographic Society (MTP) on Wednesday in an effort to
\ncurb pornographic images in the media.<\/p>\n
The organization was formed by, among others, the National
\nIndonesian Youth Committee (KNPI), Center of Law Advocacy and
\nHuman Rights (PAHAM), Indonesian Muslim Student Action Front
\n(KAMMI) and the Media Watch and Consumer Center (MWCC).<\/p>\n
MTP board member, film director Chaerul Umam, said that
\npornography in the print and electronic media had reached an
\nalarming level.<\/p>\n
\"I can't even watch TV with my kids without feeling awkward
\nwhen commercials with pornographic scenes are shown,\" Chaerul
\ntold The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Other members of MTP's board include political observer Imam
\nB. Prasodjo and TV host Ferrasta Soebardi, popularly known as
\nPepeng.<\/p>\n
The country, especially the capital, has witnessed an
\nincreasing amount of publications that feature semipornographic
\npictures and stories.<\/p>\n
The South Jakarta District Court last month sentenced chief
\neditor of Matra monthly, Robertus Riantiarno, to a five-month
\nsuspended jail term for publishing semipornographic pictures in
\nits June and July editions last year.<\/p>\n
Many other publications, however -- particularly tabloids --
\ncontinue to run far more potentially offensive pictures and
\nstories, which flood newsstands in the city without any
\nsignificant action from the authorities.<\/p>\n
MTP secretary Azimah Sobagjo said the organization had already
\nmade a detailed plan to launch its mission, which includes a
\nproposal to draft an antipornography law.<\/p>\n
\"The draft requires, among other things, a clear definition on
\nmaterials that are (legally) considered pornographic,\" Azimah
\ntold the Post.<\/p>\n
She said that in her view all materials capable of inducing
\nsexual arousal should be considered as pornography.<\/p>\n
In its statement, MTP also complained about the \"true\" first-
\nperson accounts of rape victims in some media, saying that they
\nwere solely intended to arouse readers.<\/p>\n
MTP chairwoman Nur Indrawati Pari said that her new
\norganization was ready to file complaints to the publishers of
\nmagazines and newspapers that feature pornography.<\/p>\n
\"We are also ready to launch a campaign to mold public opinion
\nagainst pornography,\" Nur said.<\/p>\n
Another antipornography association, the Indonesian Society
\nAgainst Piracy and Pornography (MAPPI), was launched on Jan. 24.<\/p>\n
The organization is chaired by Abdul Wahid Aziz Bisri, who is
\nalso chairman of the Jakarta chapter of the Jami'a Nahdlatul
\nUlama Muslim organization and a cousin of President Abdurrahman
