14 Balinese artists, scholars honored<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali: Governor Dewa Made Beratha bestowed the Dharma
\nKusuma Award to 14 artists and scholars on Thursday for their
\ndistinguished achievements in and significant contributions to
\nthe preservation and development of local arts and culture.<\/p>\n
Dharma Kusuma, which literally means the \"flower of duty\", is
\nthe highest commendation in the field of arts and culture issued
\nby the Bali administration.<\/p>\n
The recipients included Nengah Tinggen, the author of at least
\n29 books on Balinese language and literature, western-educated
\nchoreographer I Wayan Dibia and Wayan Geriya, who is one of the
\nmost respected cultural thinkers on the island.<\/p>\n
Each received a certificate of commendation, a gold medal and
\nRp 5 million in cash.<\/p>\n
\"It is an honor for me and also a driving force to work harder
\nand create more in the future,\" Dibia said.<\/p>\n
Ida Bagus Putu Wesnawa, who chairs the Bali chapter of the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan), was
\nalso among the recipients.<\/p>\n
Each of the recipients was selected by a seven-member
\ncommittee from among dozens of candidates submitted by nine

Student missing on Mount Rinjani<\/p>\n
MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: A student at Bali's Udayana
\nUniversity was reported missing while trekking on Mount Rinjani
\nin West Nusa Tenggara last week.<\/p>\n
The student, identified as Mahawira, is the son of I Made
\nSuarjaya, the director-general of Hindu and Buddhist affairs at
\nthe Ministry of Religious Affairs.<\/p>\n
The head of the Mataram search and rescue team, Ida Bagus
\nBudisma, said on Thursday Mahawira's parents in Denpasar had
\nreported the disappearance of their son and his friend, Agus
\nTresna, on Aug. 11. The two had begun their trek on Aug. 9.<\/p>\n
Agus was found alive but weak on the mountain, Budisma said.<\/p>\n
\"We received the report of the victims' disappearance on Aug.
\n11 at 8:35 p.m.,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Agus was quoted as saying that Mahawira failed to return after
\ngoing for water.<\/p>\n
Seven members of the search and rescue have been deployed to
\nsearch for Mahawira, assisted by 20 students from Udayana

Hundreds to contest DPD election<\/p>\n
SEMARANG: At least 430 people have picked up registration
\nforms to contest the 2004 election for the Central Java Regional
\nRepresentatives Council (DPD).<\/p>\n
The possible candidates include prominent cleric and poet
\nMustofa Bisri from Nahdlatul Ulama, poet Ahmad Tohari and former
\nCentral Java governors Maj. Gen. (ret) Soewardi and Maj. Gen.
\n(ret) A.A. Soegiyo.<\/p>\n
Former Diponegoro Military commander Maj. Gen. (ret)
\nHarsudiono Hartas and a member of the Surakarta royal court,
\nMangkunegoro IX, are also among those who have picked up
\nregistration forms.<\/p>\n
The 430 people -- 379 men and 51 women -- picked up the forms
\nfrom the Central Java General Elections Commission (KPUD).<\/p>\n
\"The registration opened on July 8 and will close on Sept. 8,\"
