14 ABRI members implicated in Trisakti shootings<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Defense and Security\/Armed Forces
\nCommander Gen. Wiranto said 14 Armed Forces (ABRI) personnel have
\nbeen implicated as being behind the May 12 shootings at Trisakti
\nUniversity which resulted in the death of at least four students.<\/p>\n
\"There are eight primary suspects from ABRI who are believed
\nto be behind the death of the students,\" Wiranto told journalists
\nafter attending a cabinet meeting here yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"It was also reported that six officers are also suspected of
\nnon-procedural and undisciplined action,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Wiranto said the findings of a special military team set up to
\ninvestigate the shootings also implicated \"a few members from
\nanother unit\" which were also found to be taking \"non-procedural
\nand undisciplined action\" during the incident.<\/p>\n
Despite being pressed several times by journalists, Wiranto
\nrefused to elaborate further, saying only that the suspects were
\n\"innocent until proven guilty. We will announce it later.\"<\/p>\n
At least four students were killed May 12 when security forces
\nfired on students at Trisakti University in West Jakarta where a
\ndemonstration demanding political reform was being held.<\/p>\n
Wiranto said he and other top military officers had received
\nthe report from the Armed Forces special team Sunday.<\/p>\n
\"I have ordered that the findings from other teams such as
\nfrom the National Human Rights Commission, Trisakti and the
\npolice be included in the final report of the investigation.<\/p>\n
\"From the conclusion of the findings of various teams, I will
\nthen immediately order a legal process to be carried out to
\npunish those responsible,\" he asserted.<\/p>\n
When asked when this legal process would begin, Wiranto
\nreplied: \"As soon as possible. There's a process, you know. But
\nso far, the findings are very close to the reality.\" (prb)<\/p>",
