130 'Preman' to get religious education<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City Police yesterday sent 130 street hoodlums,
\nknown locally as preman, to the Al-Wasyilah Islamic boarding
\nschool in Jelambar, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
City Police chief Maj. Gen. Dibyo Widodo, who presided over a
\nceremony at the boarding school, said that the preman would take
\npart in a program at the school until August 17. He said the
\nprogram followed suggestions made by the public regarding the
\nproper handling of street crime.<\/p>\n
\"Physical exercise alone is not enough for them,\" said Dasuki
\nAdnan, the head-master of the boarding school, adding that
\nphysical pressure might cause the preman to seek revenge.
\n\"Religious and spiritual education is indispensable if we want
\nthem to completely repent for their past wrongdoings.<\/p>\n
After completing the education program, Dibyo added, the city
\npolice would continue to keep a close watch on the preman by
\nholding monthly meetings with them. \"We hope they will become
\naware and will not be street hoodlums anymore,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Dibyo said he hoped that the program would be followed by
\nother regional police commands nationwide.<\/p>\n
Security officers, including police and the armed forces, have
\nbeen conducting operations against preman since March. The
\noperations began after a group of hoodlums attacked two officers
\nfrom Jakarta's prestigious Police College.<\/p>\n
The attack on the two plainclothes police officers took place
\non the exit ramp next to the Melawai Plaza building in the
\ncrowded Blok M shopping area in South Jakarta on March 6.<\/p>\n
First Lieutenant Budi Prasetyo Utomo, 29, was fatally stabbed
\nin the abdomen, while his companion, Capt. Arman Depari, 35,
\nsuffered several bruises to the face.<\/p>\n
Since the incident took place security officers have arrested
\nthousands of suspected street hoodlums.<\/p>\n
There have been suggestions from some quarters that
\nauthorities deal with street crime using an integrated approach
\ninvolving all people. It has been argued that the problem is not
\njust a security problem, but also one related to social and
\neconomic ills, including urbanization and the dearth of job
