        "content": "<p>13 consortia vie for new airport project<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Thirteen consortia made up of 15 foreign<br>\nand 39 local firms, including an Indonesian company, have bid for<br>\nanother major contract at Malaysia's second international airport<br>\nproject, officials have announced.<\/p>\n<p>Two French firms and others from Germany, South Korea, Japan,<br>\nIndonesia and Saudi Arabia are in Malaysian-led groups<br>\nshortlisted, said Jamilus Hussein, managing director of the Kuala<br>\nLumpur International Airport Bhd. (KLIAB).<\/p>\n<p>The deal to build an international departure and arrival<br>\nterminal for the new airport is to be awarded at the end of<br>\nFebruary.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second largest of the 54 remaining contracts at<br>\nthe new nine-billion ringgit (US$3.6 billion) airport at Sepang,<br>\n50 kilometers (30 miles) south of the capital.<\/p>\n<p>The new airport is Malaysia's largest infrastructure project<br>\nand is partly financed by a $640-million soft loan from Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said the lowest bid of 556 million ringgit ($222.4<br>\nmillion) came from a Malaysian-Japanese consortium led by listed<br>\nUEM (M) Bhd. with Japanese partners Takenaka Corp., Sato Kogyo<br>\nCo. Ltd. and Mitsui Co. Ltd.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysian companies Permodalan Negeri Selangor Bhd. and Ho Hup<br>\nConstruction Co. Bhd., both listed on the local bourse, were also<br>\npart of the consortium.<\/p>\n<p>Citra<\/p>\n<p>A group comprising Malaysian-based Citra Muda Sdn. Bhd.,<br>\nBinaan Setegap Sdn. Bhd. and Readybuilt Sdn. Bhd. as well as<br>\nIndonesian partner Konsortium Citra Kontraktor Nusantara<br>\nsubmitted the highest tender of 829.2 million ringgit ($331.7<br>\nmillion).<\/p>\n<p>Among leading listed Malaysian firms in the running are<br>\nMalaysia Resources Corp. Bhd. which partnered French company SAE<br>\nInternational and others, Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd., which<br>\nteamed up with Japanese-based Tokyu Construction Co. Ltd. and Nam<br>\nFatt Bhd., which led French firm Technip among others.<\/p>\n<p>KLIAB had stipulated that the bids must come from groups with<br>\nat least 70 percent local equity.<\/p>\n<p>Among the other foreign firms in the running are German-based<br>\nHoctief Aktiengesellschaft and Australian-based Leighton<br>\nContractors, which have teamed up with local partners.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea's Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. Ltd.,<br>\nDaewoo Corporation and Sangyong Engineering and Construction Co.<br>\nLtd. and Japanese Obayashi Corporation are among the others.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest package for the Sepang project was awarded early<br>\nlast month to a consortium led by Malaysia's Pernas Engineering<br>\nand Construction (Perspec) Sdn. Bhd. and Japan's Taisei Corp.<\/p>\n<p>The Perspec group, which also included Japan's Kajima Corp.,<br>\nShimuzu Corp. and Hazama Corp., clinched the deal to build the<br>\nmain terminal building, contact pier and baggage handling system<br>\non a tender price of 1.741 billion ringgit.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said five packages to build two runways and aircraft<br>\nparking areas would be tendered out next.<\/p>",
