Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The surge in energy prices and supply\ndisruptions due to the war in the Middle East are causing the global\ncrisis pressures to deepen, particularly for developing countries.<\/p>\n
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revealed that at least 12\ncountries are preparing to apply for new loans to mitigate the impact of\nthese global uncertainties.<\/p>\n
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stated that demand for\nfinancial assistance could surge significantly. She estimated that the\nneed for new support could reach US$20 billion to US \u201cDisruptions from the war could trigger large-scale new demand for\nfinancial support, either in the form of new loans or additions to\nexisting programmes,\u201d Georgieva said during a press conference on the\nsidelines of the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, as\nquoted by Reuters, Thursday (16\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n She added that some sub-Saharan African countries have begun seeking\nassistance. However, the IMF has not yet discussed additional loan\nprogrammes for Egypt, which currently has a facility worth US$8 billion\nor approximately Rp136 trillion.<\/p>\n On the other hand, the Indonesian government is optimistic that it\nstill has sufficient fiscal space to face global pressures.<\/p>\n This statement was made by Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa\nafter meeting with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva during the\nIMF Spring Meetings in Washington DC, United States.<\/p>\n \u201cOf course, Indonesia does not need it because our country is doing\nquite well, and we still have a fairly large limit, namely Rp420 T that\nI mentioned earlier,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n The IMF even questioned how Indonesia managed to remain solid amid\nthe not-so-easy situation. Purbaya responded that this resilience is the\nresult of policy changes implemented by the government since last\nyear.<\/p>\n These policy reforms are deemed to have made Indonesia\u2019s economy more\nprepared to face external shocks.<\/p>\n \u201cWhy can we endure in the midst of global conditions like this? But I\nexplained that we have indeed changed policies since last year, and it\nseems clear. So we are experiencing acceleration when there are shocks\nfrom global uncertainties, from high oil prices. Thus, we can absorb the\nshocks that occur,\u201d he said.<\/p>",
